AB - Plant protection with natural products is a new trend in environmentally friendly agriculture.
Nepeta rtanjensis Diklić & Milojević is an endemic and critically endangered plant species in Serbia.
We explored the phytotoxic potential of a water emulsion of Nepeta rtanjensis essential oil (NrEO)
with high amounts of trans,cis-nepetalactone on five weeds. The most sensitive was Stellaria media
(L.) Vill., as NrEO (from 0.013% to 0.1%) completely inhibited germination. Germination of
Amaranthus retroflexus L. and Artemisia vulgaris L. was completely inhibited at the highest applied
concentrations of NrEO (0.1%), while Ambrosia artemisiifolia L. germination was reduced to 48% at
the same concentration of NrEO. The most tolerant species was Cephalaria transsylvanica (L.) Schrad.
ex Roem. & Schult. as the final germination rate at the highest applied concentration of NrEO (0.1%)
was 81%, like the control (82%). To our knowledge, this is the first time the interaction of essential oils
on the germination and growth of A. vulgaris and C. transsylvanica is reported. The germination
dynamics of S. media in pots with soil were significantly inhibited when the soil was initially treated
with the highest applied concentration of the NrEO water emulsion (1%). Spraying S. media seedlings
with NrEO significantly inhibited growth parameters (shoot height, shoot fresh weight, and the number
of nodes) at the higher applied concentrations of NrEO (0.5% and 1%). Therefore, the water emulsion
of the essential oil of N. rtanjensis could be potentially developed for use in the control of invasive and
allergenic weeds.

AB - A new species of eriophyoid mite, Aculodes marcelli sp. nov., was discovered on cheatgrass, Anisantha tectorum (L.) Nevski (syn. Bromus tectorum L.), an annual grass that is native to Eurasia and Northern Africa. This grass was introduced to North America near the end of the 19th century and now is widespread and associated with the observed increases in the size, frequency, and intensity of wildfires in western N. America. In this paper, A. marcelli sp. nov., is morphologically described and illustrated. Compared with other Aculodes spp., it differs based on morphology and the sequence of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase gene, subunit I (MT-CO1). Results of morphometric analysis showed clear differentiation between A. marcelli sp. nov., and the most similar congener, A. altamurgiensis from Taeniatherum caput-medusae. Analysis of MT-CO1 sequence divergence revealed significant levels of genetic variation (17.7%) and supported the results from the morphometric analysis; therefore, it is determined that they are two different species. Aculodes marcelli sp. nov., is a new candidate agent for classical biological control of A. tectorum.

Na biljnim vrstama roda Prunus do sada je opisano 13 vrsta eriofidnih grinja roda Aculus. Vrsta Aculus fockeui (Nalepa & Trouessart) [syn. Ekstrakcija DNK uzoraka (svaki uzorak 1-5 individua) je rañena pomoću QIAGEN Dneasy Blood and Tissue Kit-a.

AB - Although eriophyoids are considered a group of microscopic organisms with simplified bodies, more than 100 characters and 250 character states related to the body and legs can be used in their systematics. It has been demonstrated that some of these taxonomic characters are more prone to homoplasy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of 35 morphological traits, analyzed by linear morphometrics, for the delimitation of 14 species from two genera: Cecidophyopsis (C. vermiformis, C. ribis, C. malpighianus, C. hendersoni, C. verilicis, C. rosmarinusis and C. psilaspis) and Cecidophyes (Ce. galii, Ce. rouhollahi, Ce. glaber, Ce. gymnaspis, Ce. nudus, Ce. psilonotus and Ce. lauri). Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) revealed statistically significant interspecies differences (Wilks’λ = 0.0000; F455,4357.726 = 65; P = 0.0000). Canonical variate analysis (CVA) indicated clear segregation of species belonging to Cecidophyopsis and Cecidophyes genera along the CV1 axis. This trend was also supported by the UPGMA cluster analysis. Morphological traits that contributed most to the distinguishing along the CV1 axis were: numbers of dorsal and ventral semiannuli, body width at the level of the f and c2 setae, distances between the 1b - 1a tubercles, distance between d setae and prodorsal shield width. According to the squared Mahalanobis distances, the greatest morphological separation was between C. hendersoni and C. ribis (Cecidophyopsis cluster) and Ce. psilonotus and Ce. lauri (Cecidophyes cluster). In addition, C. vermiformis and C. ribis (Cecidophyopsis cluster), as well as Ce. galii and Ce. glaber (Cecidophyes cluster), showed morphologically very close relationships.

Potential of Trichoderma harzianum IS005-12 (TH-IS005-12) to promote seed germination and seedling growth of Italian ryegrass (IRG) forage was evaluated in vitro. Non-desiccated seeds and those pre-harvestly desiccated with total herbicide were treated 25 days (freshly harvested) and 178 days after harvest (mature) with TH-IS005-12 spore suspensions at 0 (T0), 1.8 × 107 (T1) and 1.2 × 109 (T2) spore/mL. TH-IS005-12 promoted the early and final germination and seedling growth in all non-desiccated and desiccated, freshly harvested as well as mature IRG seeds. It was more effective in pre-harvestly desiccated freshly harvested seeds where T2 treatment increased final germination rate for 24%, root number per seedling 1.6-fold and seedling vigour 1.9-fold compared to the untreated control. Moreover, TH-IS005-12 showed an inhibitory activity against seedborne fungi Alternaria alternata and A. ventricosa suppressing their growth in vitro by 82% and 77%, respectively.

AB - Commercial production of potato, Solanum tuberosum L., is based on vegetative propagation by seed tubers. High-quality seed material is obtained from potato plants grown from minitubers (pre-basic seed potatoes). Likewise, minitubers are produced by acclimation and growth on soil or solid substrate of previously in vitro-propagated, virus-free microplants or microtubers. Aeroponics is a modern, soilless technique for minitubers’ production. In the aeroponic cultivation system, foliage is grown under conventional conditions, while the underground stems and roots of potato plants are located in a dark chamber, module, suspended in the air, and supplied with water and nutrients through a nutrient solution dispersed in the form of fine mist particles. Minitubers (tubers of 5-25 mm in size) are produced on underground stems, namely stolons. Potato minituber propagation in aeroponics has significant advantages over other used systems or techniques. This system enables the production of a high number of minitubers per plant during the production cycle that can usually be repeated during the year. Besides, successive harvesting allows minitubers to reach the desired, uniform size. Tubers grown in an aeroponic system are well-protected from pests and soil-borne diseases. Due to the recirculation of nutrient solution, efficient usage of space, and minimal environmental pollution, aeroponics enables the production of minitubers in an environmentally friendly manner. This chapter summarizes the current knowledge of the aeroponic production of potatoes. The advantages and deficiencies of this interesting production technique are also discussed.

AB - three lettuce and three celeriac cultivars. Seeds of three wheat cultivars were treated under laboratory conditions with Trichoderma harzianum and eight Bacillus spp. Seed germination, seedling growth, and the presence of the following pathogens were determined: Fusarium sp., Alternaria sp., Penicillium sp., and Mucor sp. The Coveron treatment was the most effective on lettuce seeds tested in the germination cabinet. Seed germination was higher by 4% than in the control. Alternatively, germination of seeds treated with boron in the greenhouse was higher by 12% than in the control. The Coveron treatment had the highest effect on the shoot length, which was greater by 0.7 and 2.1 cm in the germination cabinet and the greenhouse, respectively. This treatment was also the most effective on the root length. Zn, B, and MIX treatments increased celeriac seed germination by 14% in the germination cabinet. The Zn treatment was the most efficient on seeds tested in the greenhouse. The germination was higher by 15%. A significant cultivar × treatment interaction was determined in both observed species under both conditions. The maximum effect on wheat seed germination (8%) was achieved with the T. harzianum treatment in the Salazar cultivar. A significant interdependence (p ≤ 0.01 to p ≤ 0.001) was established between seed germination and the seedling growth. The interrelationship between seed germination and pathogens of all cultivars was negative.
