AB - One unusual aspect of resistance to sharka (Plum Pox Virus, PPV) has been discovered and studied in plum trees in the six consecutive years. The absence of sharka symptoms in some of primary branches of infected plum trees characterized as resistance. Symptoms appearance was observed and PPV presence was checked serologically by DAS- ELISA test as well as by grafting transmission. That aspect of resistance mainly appears in a portion of the tree crown, i.e. on some primary branches of young plum trees and it is diminishing in following years. That distinct resistance to sharka (PPV) was found in trees of Čačanska rodna, Stanley and Crvena ranka cvs. In selected plum trees in the parts with such resistance no sharka symptoms appeared nor PPV was proved. The absence of sharka symptoms as well as PPV in a portion of a plum tree otherwise diseased by sharka is considered as a sign of resistance. For such aspect of resistance the name “Sectorial Resistance” is proposed. It is continues more and detail research on sectorial resistance of plum to PPV are in progress.

AB - Graft transmissibility of the plum sectorial resistance to Plum pox virus (PPV) was investigated. Sectorial resistance is the resistance which is manifested in a sector or portion of infected plant, where virus is not present. Sectorial resistance to PPV is exhibited in the crown or in primary shoots of the plum tree. Double budding method was applied. One bud was carrying sectorial resistance to PPV, while the other one was infected with the virus. Infection on shoots was evaluated by symptoms appearance and serological test for PPV presence.Among three plum cultivars the best results were obtained with cv. "Crvena ranka". Sectorial resistance to PPV has been successfully transmitted by buds of "Crvena ranka". Plum cv. "Č ačanska rodna" failed to transmit sectorial resistance. Plum cv. "Stanley" was between those two above-mentioned plum cultivars.

AB - The presence and distribution of grapevine phytoplasmas was investigated from 2003 to 2005 in some of the most important viticultural areas of Serbia, considering in particular the susceptibility and sensitiveness of both local and imported grapevine cultivars. Both flavescence doree (FD) and bois noir (BN) phytoplasmas were detected using molecular techniques. The presence of FD phytoplasma at the moment seems limited, while BN phytoplasma appears to be present in the majority of grape growing regions in Serbia. Field surveys demonstrate that grapevine yellows (GY) epidemics in the vineyards inspected in Serbia spread very fast, indeed the incidence of symptomatic plants increased considerably year by year. In particular, the average rate of FD diffusion increased from 45.5 to 93.0 % in the Sicevacko region, while the spread of BN resulted lower. The local cultivar 'Plovdina' appeared to be extremely sensitive to FD phytoplasma showing a percentage of infected plants ranging from 91 to 100 %. PCR-RFLP and phylogenetic analyses based on ribosomal protein (rp) and secY gene sequences performed on Serbian FD grapevine strains demonstrated their close relationship with the Italian FD-C strain present in north-east Italy. Based on both phylogenetic markers, Serbian FD strains represent a new distinct lineage and together with the FD-C strain form a major phylogenetic group within the elm yellows group.

AB - Redness as a harmful disease on maize has been present in Banat, as well as in some other regions of Serbia, since 1957. Some years the redness of maize was epiphytotic causing considerable reduction of yield of corn, sometimes over 50%. Redness of maize is a peculiar disease. It appears usually at the beginning of July when maize plants approach tasseling. First symptom can be seen as redness of main vein in the leaves near the ear. Later on redness spreads all over leaf blade, than on upper and lower leaves, as well as on stalk and ear of infected plants. The kernels of disesed maize plants, starting from the top of the ear remain empty (not properly filled) and shrivelled. Infected maize plants wilt and dry up early. From maize plants diseased by redness the fastidious bacteria have been extracted. Those bacteria we found in leaf, kernel and adventive roots. Fastidious bacteria were also extracted from Johnson grass (Sorghum halepense) leaf and rhizome, as well as from leaves of Setaria viridis and Taraxacum officinale plants showing symptoms of redness. Maize plants grown under plastic tunnel (controlled space) from the beginning of June until the end of August were not infected and did not show the symptoms of redness. On the other hand, the most infections of maize plants by the cause of redness took place when maize plants were uncovered during the second half of July. In both years of investigations (2004. and 2005.) the redness was present in the surrounding crops of maize. In 2004 32.0% and in 2005 21.5% maieze plants in neighbousing crops showed symptoms of redness.
AB - Crvenilo kukuruza javlja se u nekim rejonima Srbije. U određenim periodima to oboljenje ima epifitotičan karakter izazivajući značajne štete u proizvodnji kukuruza. Etiologija i epidemiologija crvenila kukuruza nisu razjašnjene.
