AB - Režim upravljanja i mere suzbijanja korova igraju ključnu ulogu u brojnosti i
diverzitetu korovske flore vinograda.
sastav korovske flore vinograda.

AB - Riparian areas experience strong invasion pressures worldwide and represent important points of spread for invasive alien plants (IAPs) in the European mainland. The Danube Basin is a well-known point of high plant invasion levels. Given that the middle part of the Danube Basin is critically understudied and the general lack of data for Serbia, the study aimed to provide an insight into the spatial patterns of plant invasions in the riparian areas of Serbia (Middle Danube Basin area). A total of 250 field sites, distributed along 39 rivers (nine catchment areas) and six canal sections, were studied during a four-year period (2013–2016) for the presence and abundance of IAPs. At the landscape scale, we studied distribution patterns of IAPs, differences in invasion levels in different catchment areas and between rivers and canals. At the local scale, we investigated how the proximity to roads/railway lines, housing areas, different land-use types (primarily agriculture), and dominant vegetation on site related to invasion patterns. Of the 26 studied IAPs, those with a well-known weedy behavior, long history of cultivation and strong affinity for riparian areas prevailed in the study area. Riparian zones of the Danube catchment exhibited the highest invasion levels in terms of IAPs richness and abundance, followed by the catchment areas of the Timok, Sava and Zapadna Morava rivers. Surprisingly, the Danube-Tisa-Danube canal network had the lowest invasion level. At the local scale, agriculture in proximity of the field site and dominant vegetation on site were observed as significant predictors of the invasion level. On the other hand, proximity to roads/railway lines and housing areas was not related to the invasion level. Finally, our study provides the first systematic overview of IAPs’ distribution data for riparian areas of the Middle Danube Basin in Serbia, which could provide a basis for long-term monitoring of IAPs and development of future management plans.

Najčešće korovske vrste zasada jabuka u Srbiji su: Amaranthus retrofl exus, Ambrosia artemisiifolia, Carduus acanthoides, Chenopodium album, Convolvulus arvensis, Cynodon dactylon, Erigeron canadensis, Hordeum murinum, Lamium amplexicaule, L. purpureum, Medicago lupulina, Setaria spp., Sonchus arvensis, Stellaria media, Stenactis annua, Taraxacum offi cinale, Veronica spp., Vicia spp. itd.

AB - Community science (also often referred to as citizen science) provides a unique opportunity to address questions beyond the scope of other research methods whilst simultaneously engaging communities in the scientific process. This leads to broad educational benefits, empowers people, and can increase public awareness of societally relevant issues such as the biodiversity crisis. As such, community science has become a favourable framework for researching alien species where data on the presence, absence, abundance, phenology, and impact of species is important in informing management decisions. However, uncertainties arising at different stages can limit the interpretation of data and lead to projects failing to achieve their intended outcomes. Focusing on alien species centered community science projects, we identified key research questions and the relevant uncertainties that arise during the process of developing the study design, for example, when collecting the data and during the statistical analyses. Additionally, we assessed uncertainties from a linguistic perspective, and how the communication stages among project coordinators, participants and other stakeholders can alter the way in which information may be interpreted. We discuss existing methods for reducing uncertainty and suggest further solutions to improve data reliability. Further, we make suggestions to reduce the uncertainties that emerge at each project step and provide guidance and recommendations that can be readily applied in practice. Reducing uncertainties is essential and necessary to strengthen the scientific and community outcomes of community science, which is of particular importance to ensure the success of projects aimed at detecting novel alien species and monitoring their dynamics across space and time.

AB - Portulaca oleracea L. is one of the most widely distributed plant species, invading a host of worldwide regions. Rivers and canals, as
corridors connecting neighboring habitats, are known to exhibit high invasion levels. Consequently, the aim of this paper was to show
which catchment areas, environmental factors and habitat types can be seen as predictors of the presence of this invasive species in the
riparian areas of Serbia. Field research was carried out at 250 field sites, where the cover and abundance of P. oleracea, relevant
environmental variables and habitat type were recorded. Redundancy analysis (RDA) and response curves fitted using a generalized
linear model (GLM) were used to show the relation of the cover of P. oleracea and the following variables: catchment area, predominant
bank material, elevation, and the total number of invasive species on site. A non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) was used to
group sites where P. oleracea was found, based on the values of its cover. In general, primarily the rivers in the northern, low-lying part of
Serbia can be seen as important corridors of the spread of P. oleracea. Its dominance is especially associated with areas draining into the
Danube and Sava rivers and field sites characterized by a high pressure of invasive plants. Of the total number of records, the highest
number of invaded field sites was recorded along the Danube, Tisa and Zapadna Morava rivers. Regarding the environmental and habitat
predictors, the results have shown that the abundance of P. oleracea is associated with gravelly and sandy banks and grassland habitat
types, primarily anthropogenic herb stands.

toga, riparijalna staništa postaju centri diverziteta stranih i invazivnih biljnih vrsta, a
ujedno i potencijalni izvor njihovog daljeg prodora u okolna prirodna staništa i
agroekosisteme.
217 lokaliteta u riparijalu 39 reka (osam rečnih slivova) i 33 u riparijalu šest deonica
kanala hidrosistema Dunav-Tisa-Dunav (HS DTD). Podaci o brojnosti i pokrovnosti 26
Amorpha fruticosa L., Erigeron canadensis L., Robinia pseudoacacia L. i Echinochloa
crus-galli (L.) P. Beauv.
vodotoka određenom rečnom slivu i zastupljenosti pojedinačnih istraživanih taksona,
dodatno potvrđena rezultatima CCA analize. CCA analiza je ukazala da određeni
taksoni pokazuju jaču preferenciju prema rekama pojedinih rečnih slivova, npr.
Helianthus tuberosus L. je u većoj meri zastupljen u riparijalu reka sliva Zapadne
Morave, dok je Reynoutria x bohemica Chrtek & Chrtková u najvećoj meri prisutna u
riparijalnim zonama u okviru slivova Zapadne Morave i Drine. Sa druge strane, vrste
Asclepias syriaca L., Solidago gigantea Ait. i Xanthium spinosum L. su u većoj meri
zastupljene u riparijalu kanala HS DTD, u odnosu na rečne tokove. Analizom
celokupnog seta podataka o distribuciji, brojnosti i pokrovnosti analiziranih taksona,
periodu, usled klimatskih promena, slivovi Save, Velike i Južne Morave takođe naći
pod snažnim pritiskom daljeg širenja invazivnih biljnih vrsta. Porast u broju i
pokrovnosti invazivnih biljnih vrsta moguće je očekivati i u riparijalnim zonama
visokoplaninskih predela i na području jugozapadne Srbije (doline Lima, Ibra i njihovih
pritoka), takođe kao posledica klimatskih promena.

AB - Ambrosia trifida L. (giant ragweed, Asteraceae) is native to the North American continent and was introduced into Europe and Asia at the end of the 19th century. In its native range, this tall annual species is common in riparian and ruderal habitats and is also a major weed in annual cropping systems. For nearly a century, A. trifida has also been of great concern in the U.S. for its highly allergenic pollen, necessitating targeted control measures to reduce its impact on human populations. Based on the distribution of A. trifida in North America and in its introduced range, riparian systems in the rest of the world may be particularly at risk to invasion, with potential negative consequences for their biodiversity. Currently, A. trifida has invaded Asia more widely than Europe, likely due to the more favourable local conditions in Asia. Throughout its introduced range, A. trifida is host to a limited number of invertebrates and pathogens and only a few biological agents are available for its control. The main impacts of A. trifida at a global level are on crop yield and human health, resulting in significant socio-economic impacts. The success of A. trifida invasion in areas in which it has been introduced is still unclear, but climate change may increase climate suitability, increasing the potential for A. trifida to spread. While effective management in cultivated fields seems potentially possible, the development and control of A. trifida in natural riparian habitats is of great concern due to the difficulty of management in these areas.

AB - Transportation corridors such as waterways and road networks serve as an entranceway for invasive and economically important weed species. The unstable environment of riparian areas and nutrient enrichment of road verges promotes the establishment and spread of these species, which may have a negative effect on nearby arable land, leading to severe yield reductions. We aimed to register the presence and frequency of five selected weed species (Chenopodium album, Cirsium arvense, Convolvulus arvensis, Cynodon dactylon, and Lactuca serriola) within these linear corridors. Sites along waterways were visited during 2013-2016, and road networks during 2018-2019. At each site, studied weed species were registered along 100 m transects, resulting in 250 localities along waterways and 180 near road networks. The most frequent species is C. arvensis, followed by L. serriola and C. album, while less prevalent species are C. arvense and C. dactylon. The main characteristic of studied species is their preference for roadside habitats, except for Chenopodium album, which is more common in riparian areas.

AB - In this study, we report genetic characterization of Oro- banche cumana, the causal agent of sunflower wilting in Serbia. The genetic diversity of this parasitic plant in Serbia was not studied before. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers and partial rbcL gene sequences analysis were used to characterize the O. cumana populations at the molecular level. While phylogenetic analyses of RAPD-PCR amplicons were performed using unweighted pair-group Method analy- ses, rbcL gene sequences were analyzed using neigbor joining method and minimum spanning tree. Molecular analyses of RAPD-PCR analysis revealed high genetic diversity of O. cumana populations which indicated high adaptive potential of this parasitic weed in Serbia. Further analyses of rbcL gene using minimum span- ning tree revealed clear differences among diverse sections of Orobanche genus. Although this molecular marker lacked the resolution to display intrapopulation diversity it could be a useful tool for understanding the evolution of this parasitic plant. Our results suggested that O. cumana has great genetic potential which can lead to differentiation of more virulent races which is important for determining crop breeding strategies for their control.

AB - Agrotechnical measures are the main factor defining the vineyard weed flora structure and composition, while adequate weed control measures simultaneously ensure that vineyards are being well-managed, thus securing good grapevine health and high quality of wine. Given that the biological spectrum of weeds affects the choice of weed control measures, the aim of this study was to determine the biological properties of the weed flora in Vršac vineyards, by assessing dominant life forms and phenology of the identified weeds. The floristic analysis was conducted during the 2016 vegetation season (March-November) at 60 plots (1 m2), at three field sites. The presence of 97 plant taxa, belonging to 26 families, was determined. The biological spectrum of the vineyards weed flora has shown a thero¬phyto-hemicryptophyte character (therophytes: 57.73% and hemicryptophytes: 34.02%). The scapose herbaceous plants with summer-flowering phenology were dominant within the therophytes and hemicryptophytes. The obtained results have shown a higher weed diversity in vineyards, when compared to previous research of the weed flora in the study area, but similar to more recent studies conducted in the neighbouring countries. Furthermore, the dominant presence of therophytes in the vineyard weed flora was expected, bearing in mind the primarily mechanical weed control measures traditionally applied in vineyards

AB - Application of various agrotechnical measures is the key factor defining the composition of
the vineyard weed flora. Vineyard weed communities are highly diverse, due to specific
environmental characteristics and frequent disturbances of these agroecosystems. Bearing all
this in mind and due to a limited number of studies of the vineyard weed flora in Serbia, the
aim of this research was to assess the phytogeographical characteristics of the vineyard weed
flora in the Vršac vineyards. Field research encompassed the entire vegetation season (March-
November) in 2016 and was performed at three localities within the area of the Vršac
vineyards. Floristic analysis was done at 60 fixed 1 m2 plots (48 between-row and 12 in-row
plots). Phytogeographical analysis has determined that 97 weed species which were recorded
belong to eight areal types. Weed species predominately belonged to the Eurasian areal type,
with 49 recorded species (51%). Results have shown the presence of 14 species of
cosmopolitan distribution, while the Pontic-Mediterranean areal type was represented by 10
weed species (10%). This transitional areal type was represented by four areal groups, of
which the Pontic-CentralAsian-Submediterranean group was the most numerous. Of the
plants typical for the Pannonian region of Serbia, i.e. the steppe species, belonging to the
Pontic-SouthSiberian areal type, only two weed species (Asperugo procumbens and Senecio
vernalis) were recorded. Allochthonous species (adventive areal type) were represented by
eight weed species, with species originating from North America (Amaranthus retroflexus,
Erigeron annuus, E. canadensis, Panicum capillare and Xanthium strumarium subsp.
italicum) being dominant.

AB - Agricultural intensification has, over the last two centuries, led to an overall reduction in biodiversity and ecosystem funcionality of riparian areas in Europe. Knowing that such frequent and far-reaching anthropogenic disturbances affect native plant diversity and given the geographical position of the Danube-Tisa-Danube (DTD) canal system in the Vojvodina Province, as the main agricultural area of Serbia, the aim of this research was to analyze the weed flora along the shorelines of the DTD canals. Field studies were conducted in 2015 and 2016 at 33 field sites distributed along the six main canals of the DTD system. A total of 188 plant taxa, belonging to 137 genera and 48 families were recorded. The biological spectrum of the weed flora was shown to be of a hemicryptophyto-therophyte character, with 37% of hemicryptophytes and 30% of therophytes recorded. Phytogeographical analysis has highlighted a clear dominance of Eurasian species (44%), while high proportions of adventive and cosmopolitan species recorded are consistent with strong anthropogenic pressures characteristic of the shorelines of the DTD canal system. Among the adventive areal type, 19 species which are considered as invasive for the territory of Serbia have also been documented.

AB - Pistia stratiotes L. (water lettuce) is known as one of the most troublesome aquatic macrophytes, strongly affecting the environment and human activities in slowmoving and stagnant inland water systems. It was introduced into Europe in the 20th century and has since spread to 15 European countries. This paper presents data on the first record of this invasive aquatic plant in natural inland waters of Vojvodina (northern lowland part of Serbia) and discusses the possible pathways of its introduction. Field research was conducted in October and November 2017 on the Begej River in Vojvodina Province (Serbia), where populations of P. stratiotes were documented for the first time near Srpski Itebej, in close proximity (1.2 km downstream) of the Romanian border. The plant samples were collected, photographed in situ and deposited in the BUNS Herbarium. The relevant environmental data were also recorded in situ and water samples were collected for chemical analysis. This new record presents the first documented case of this invasive alien in rivers in Serbia, and expands upon the previous findings of this species in natural thermal waters of south-eastern and eastern Serbia. Taking into account the distance from the Romanian border and the fact that it has already been present in this country for several years, this introduction could be attributed to the spontaneous spreading of P. stratiotes from this neighbouring country. Nevertheless, despite this possibility, discarded aquarium plants cannot be entirely discounted as a potential source of this new introduction. Although it is hard to predict the exact consequences of this new introduction at such an early stage, bearing in mind the detrimental impacts P. stratiotes can have on the environment and excellent lateral connectivity of the Begej River with the canal and river network of Serbia, this finding highlights the need to take urgent action to control and instate regular monitoring measures, especially on the rivers and canals located close to the state borders.

AB - The applicability of 24-epibrassinolide for reducing phytotoxicity during combined treatments of soybean with thifensulfuron-methyl and imazamox was examined. Tests were conducted in three commercial soybean varieties (Valjevka, Galina and Galeb) on fields of the PKB Co. at Lepušnica and Glogonjski Rit over three vegetation seasons. Commercial products of thifensulfuron-methyl, imazamox and 24-epibrassinolide were used in the trials. The products were applied in combinations, using the recommended application rates at the soybean growth stage of third trifoliate. Phytotoxicity was assessed 14 and 30 days after treatment, and grain yield of each soybean variety was measured at the end of each vegetation season. The combination of thifensulfuron-methyl and imazamox was found to be toxic to soybean in all three seasons, and symptoms of phytotoxicity included: chlorosis and dark red venation of leaves, delayed development of young leaves, and stunted growth. Phytotoxicity was significantly lower in the fields treated with 24-epibrassinolide. Also, the combination of thifensulfuron-methyl, imazamox and 24-epibrassinolide was associated with higher soybean grain yield, compared to the combination of thifensulfuron-methyl and imazamox.

AB - Xanthium strumarium L., also known as common cocklebur, is a potentially invasive weed species in Serbia. It is one of the most competitive weeds, strongly affecting the yield of some crops, such as maize, soybean, sunflower, sugar beet, etc. Since watercourses act as important transportation routes for the long-distance dispersal of weeds and the fruit of X. strumarium is easily dispersed by water, our aim was to analyse the degree of X. strumarium invasion in riparian areas of Serbia and examine the role of rivers and canals as its potential invasion corridors. The field research was carried out during the summer months of 2013,2014, and 2015, along the course of 35 rivers and five major canals of the Danube- Tisa-Danube Hydrosystem (HSDTD) in Serbia. Fieldwork was conducted along 100 m long transects of 500 m long river stretches (chosen following the RHS methodology), where the invasive alien weed species presence and abundance were recorded. Over the period of three years, the presence of X. strumarium was recorded along the course of 33 rivers (94.25%), while it was documented along 66.85% of the total number of river stretches. However, along the canals, it was recorded in only 12% of the localities. The data on the distribution ofX. strumarium expand the existing knowledge on the distribution of this economically harmful weed species in our country, while at the same time highlighting riparian areas of rivers as potentially important corridors of its spread.
Terenska istraživanja obavljena su u periodu letnjih meseci 2013, 2014. i 2015. godine, duž toka 35 reka i pet glavnih kanala hidrosistema Dunav-Tisa-Dunav u Srbiji.

The data on the distribution ofX. strumarium expand the existing knowledge on the distribution of this economically harmful weed species in our country, while at the same time highlighting riparian areas of rivers as potentially important corridors of its spread., Xanthium strumarium L. u narodu poznat kao obična ili zelena boca, je potencijalno invazivna korovska vrsta na području Srbije. Terenska istraživanja obavljena su u periodu letnjih meseci 2013, 2014. i 2015. godine, duž toka 35 reka i pet glavnih kanala hidrosistema Dunav-Tisa-Dunav u Srbiji.

AB - Aquatic ecosystems are particularly vulnerable to introductions of non-indigenous species, which potentially lead to major disruptions in the functioning of these invaluable habitats. Despite the significance of aquatic systems, there is no collated data available on the aquatic non-native plants in Serbia. Consequently, the aim of this paper is to provide a first overview of the aquatic alien plant species recorded in Serbia, their origins, current distribution, habitat preferences and invasiveness status. This study comprises the results of a comprehensive literature review and extensive field research on lake and river systems over a nine year period (2007-2015), with the addition of data from the IASV database and Joint Danube Surveys 2 & 3. The results of this study show the presence of seven non-indigenous aquatic plant species in Serbia which, despite being a relatively low number when compared to France and Germany, is in line with most of the countries of the region (e.g. Croatia, Bulgaria and FYR Macedonia). The majority of the species are native to the Americas, which concurs with the results of previous studies at the European level, with only one species of Asian origin. The most abundant of the registered non-natives is Vallisneria spiralis, followed by Azolla filiculoides and Elodea nuttallii, while Cabomba caroliniana, as the newest registered aquatic alien in Serbia, has the least number of records. All of the registered non-natives predominantly occur in running waters, including as much as 91% of the records for Elodea canadensis and 85% for Elodea nuttalli. Vallisneria spiralis is present in five different EUNIS habitat types, while Paspalum distichum was recorded predominantly along the River Danube, thereby highlighting it as P. distichum's main corridor of spread in Serbia. The distribution of all the recorded non-indigenous species is primarily linked to the northern, low-lying part of Serbia-i.e. Vojvodina Province. Such a distribution pattern is concordant with the presence of adequate habitat types, the courses of potential international invasion corridors in the Sava and Danube rivers and the position of the elaborate irrigation canal network of the Danube-Tisa-Danube Hydrosystem; but also with the frequency of studies carried out in this region over the years. Of the seven aquatic aliens present in Serbian waterbodies, three are considered to be highly invasive and one potentially invasive, while two have also been included in the list of 150 most widespread alien species in Europe.

AB - As photosynthesis is the basic process during which light energy is absorbed and converted into organic matter, the importance of the plant pigment chlorophyll (a and b forms) as an intermediary in transformation of the absorbed solar energy and its activity in the process of photosynthesis and synthesis of organic substances in plants are crucial. Therefore, this paper provides an overview of methods for monitoring the optical activity of chlorophyll molecules and methods (non-destructive and destructive) for quantification of chlorophyll in plants. These methods are used to estimate the effects of different stress factors (abiotic, biotic and xenobiotic) on the efficiency of photosynthesis and bioproductivity, aiming to assess the impact that these limiting factors have on the yield of various cultivars. Also, those methods for analysis of chlorophyll optical activity and/or content are appropriate for assessing the reaction of weed species to different agricultural practices (mineral nutrition, treatment by herbicides, etc.) and studies of different aspects of weed ecophysiology and their influence on crop harvest.

AB - The paper examines the efficacy and selectivity of mesotrione in combination with terbuthylazine, nicosulfuron and S-metolachlor in maize crops. The studies were conducted during 2014, in two localities, and the following herbicides were applied: Mezotrion 100 g/L OD (mesotrione) in quantities of 1.0 and 1.2 L/ha; Egnit OD (mesotrione + nicosulfuron) in quantities of 1.0 and 1.2 L/ha; CA0914MT (mesotrione + terbuthylazine) in quantities of 1.75, 2.0 and 2.3 L/ha; S metolahlor 375 g/L + Terbutilazin 125 g/L + Mezotrion 37.5 g/L (mesotrione + terbuthylazine + S-metolachlor) in quantity of 3.5 L/ha. The efficacy of the herbicides applied was assessed 3 weeks after the application. Mesotrione has shown high efficacy in the control of the following species: Amaranthus retroflexus, Chenopodium album, Chenopodium hybridum, Cirsium arvense, Datura stramonium, Solanum nigrum, Sinapis arvensis and Xanthium strumarium. For Abutilon theophrasti, Ambrosia artemisiifolia, Bilderdykia convolvulus, Lactuca serriola, Polygonum aviculare and Polygonum lapathifolim high efficacy was confirmed only in higher quantities of application (1.2 L/ha). In combination with terbuthylazine and S-metolachlor the efficacy was significantly improved for Echinochloa crusgalli, Hibiscus trionum, Setaria glauca and Sorghum halepense (s), while in the combination with nicosufuron the efficacy was also increased for the Johnoson grass developed from rhizome. For the species like Convolvulus arvensis and Cynodon dactilon none of the applied herbicide combinations was efficient enough. At the same time, mesotrione alone, or in combination with terbuthylazine, nicosulfuron and S-metolachlor, has shown good selectivity towards maize.
Mezotrion je ispoljio visoku efikasnost u suzbijanju vrsta: Amaranthus retroflexus, Chenopodium album, Chenopodium hybridum, Cirsium arvense, Datura stramonium, Solanum nigrum, Sinapis arvensis i Xanthium strumarium.

AB - The number of invasive species is increasing worldwide, and certain habitats, such as ruderal areas, are especially susceptible to invasion, highlighting the practical importance of ruderal flora and vegetation research. The aim of this research was to analyze ruderal flora of the Pančevački rit area, after a ten-year period, in order to ascertain the emergence of new and spread dynamics of already present invasive species. Field research was carried out in the area of Glogonjski rit, Padinska Skela and Kovilovo, followed by a comparison of the data gathered with the results of the previous research, done during the 1999-2002 period. The results confirmed the presence of potentially, sporadically and highly invasive plants in the area studied. The increase in the number of records was registered for the species: Amorpha fruticosa, Amaranthus retroflexus, Cuscutta sp., Echinocystis lobata and Veronica persica. The results have also shown changes in the cover of species A. fruticosa, A. retroflexus and Sorghum halepense. A presence of two so far, on this area, unregistered invasive species: Ailanthus altissima and Eleusine indica, was also confirmed.

AB - The effect of mesotrione on microbiological activity in soil was investigated. Trials were set up in laboratory on chernozem soil (pH 7.0, organic matter 3.5%, sand 26%, silt 45%, clay 29%) at Surcin, Serbia. Mesotrione was added at rates 0.5 (field rate), 5, 25 i 50 mg/kg soil. Untreated soil served as control. Samples were collected for analysis 5, 20, 40 and 60 days after mesotrione application. The effects were assessed on bacteria abundance, fungi abundance, and dehydrogenase activity. Mesotrione was found to cause different effects on the soil microbial activity in soil and its influence depended on the rate of application and duration of activity. Mesotrione applied at 0.5 and 5 mg/kg soil did not have any effect on microbial activity. The higher herbicide doses (25 and 50 mg/kg) induced increasing activity from the 5th to 60th day. These experimental data indicated that mesotrione affected soil microbial activity, but the effects were only detected at higher doses far exceeding the recommended field rate.
