AB - There are insufficient data about long-term (longer than six-months) residual effects of insecticides against Acanthoscelides obtectus (Say) as an important economic insect pest of stored bean. Therefore, we evaluated, in laboratory conditions, the insecticide potential of recommended rates of commercial formulations: organophosphate malathion (10 mg active ingredient - AI/kg), spinosyns bioinsecticide spinosad (1 mg AI/kg) and pyrethroid deltamethrins (0,25 mg AI/kg, with and without the synergist piperonil butoxide – PBO) after 210-, 265-, 310- and 365-days of post-treatment. Testing was performed on two types of beans with kidney- and cranberry-shaped kernels to evaluate the insecticide residual effects on the survival of weevils, progeny production, and related levels of kernels damage. Survival of weevils depends mainly on adults exposure/living period in treated beans and on the recovering period. Small differencies in weevils survival in each insecticide were recorded. We found increases in progeny and thus higher damage in beans, as manifested effects of sublethal doses only in malathion treated bean. In spinosad treated bean we recorded low levels of progeny and damage, below the economic threshold. In deltamethrin treatments, we recorded weevils avoiding contact with beans, no progeny and no damages. The effect of bean type was very low or non existent. It can be concluded that bioinsecticide spinosad can provide long-term protection of common beans against A. obtectus, while organophosphate malathion has low control potential. Pyrethroid deltamethrins residues cause adults to avoid treated beans and no offspring to appear. The obtained results might have significant impact on better understanding of weevils behaviour in the presence of insecticide residues and on the creation of sustainable pest management programmes.

AB - Žitni moljac, Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier) i kukuruzni žižak, Sitophilus zeamais
insekticida nema štetnih ostataka i doprinose očuvanju kvaliteta uskladištenih proizvoda.
Insekticidni potencijal prašiva i mogućnost komercijalne primene zavise od sadržaja
amorfnog silicijum dioksida (SiO2), veličine čestica i geografskog porekla. Namera u ovom
aktivnosti insekticida. Imaga S. cerealella i S. zeamais su izlagana u kukuruzu tretiranom
prašivima u količinama 0,5, 1 i 1,5 g/kg. Smrtnost imaga obe vrste je utvrđena posle sedam i
14 dana izlaganja i sedam dana oporavka samo imaga S. zeamais u netretiranom kukuruzu.
zeamais.

primenjuju insekticidi.
Krompir namenjen
kontroli je tretiran vodom. Efikasnost u suzbijanju larvi L1-3 i L4 stupnja je ocenjivana posle 2-
96-100%, a najmanje efikasan lambda-cihalotrin, 35% u Belegišu, 50% u Sefkerinu i 100% u
Glogonju.
lokalitetima najefikasniji insekticidi bili hlorantraniliprol, spinosad i abamektin, 97-100%, a
najslabiji lambda-cihalotrin, 71% u Sefkerinu i Belegišu i 88% u Glogonju. Za starije larve su
na svim lokalitetima najefikasniji bili hlorantraniliprol, spinosad i abamektin, 99-100%, dok je
najnižu efikasnost ispoljio lambda-cihalotrin, 0-20% u Sefkerinu i Belegišu, i 95% u Glogonju.

piperonil butoksidom i SC, bez sinergista) ispitaju efekti preporučene količine primene i
25±1°C i 60±5% r.v.v.
Insekti
nedelje, posle tri i 14 dana izlaganja u tretiranoj pšenici, i sedam dana oporavka u brašnu.
nedelja.
U prvom eksperimentu, posle dva i sedam dana izlaganja brašnara, nije zabeležena
smrtnost veća od 5%. Posle 14 dana izlaganja su obe formulacije deltametrina, primenje u
99%, utvrđena i u pšenici tretiranoj sa 0,1 mg/kg. Takođe, utvrđeno je da je formulacija
deltametrina bez sinergista, posle 14 dana izlaganja brašnara količinama 0,05 i 0,025 mg/kg
efikasnost insekticida deltametrina.

AB - The bean weevil, Acanthoscelides obtectus (Say) is a serious pest of stored bean seeds. In an effort to improve current management programs the intention of our study was to assess in the laboratory the impact of insecticide deposits on weevil survival and progeny production after 0, 7, 14, 30, 75, 120 and 165 days of residual activity on beans, and the related bean damage. Two bean types (Gradištanac and Biser) were dusted by malathion (10 mg AI/kg, DP formulation), and treated by water dilutions of spinosad (1 mg AI/kg, SC formulation) and two deltamethrin products, either without the synergist piperonyl butoxide – PBO (0.25 mg AI/kg, SC formulation) or with PBO (0.25 mg AI/kg + 2.25 mg AI/kg, EC formulation). Weevil survival was assessed after 2, 7 and 14 days of exposure and after 0 and 7 days of recovery. Progeny production and damage (kernel damage and weight loss), were assessed after additional 8 weeks. Malathion residual deposits showed the highest effectiveness on survival (no survived weevils), while deltamethrin deposits with PBO were the least effective, i. e at the same level or lower than weevil survival in untreated beans. The highest impact in terms of progeny production and damage were showed by the residual deposits of both deltamethrin formulations (no progeny or damage). In the presence of spinosad and malathion deposits, we recorded low progeny and damage, significantly under the economic threshold. No significant differences between Gradištanac and Biser types were recorded in treatments, while higher progeny and damage we recorded by the control Gradištanac bean than the Biser type, which exceeded economic threshold. Our data show that residual deposits of all tested insecticides on bean kernels demonstrated high control potentials against A. obtectus but deltamethrin deposits, especially with PBO, caused high variation in weevils response.

AB - Progeny numbers and life parameters of Tribolium castaneum reared on a range of different animal feeds which varied in their protein-carbohydrate ratios (corn starch; corn feed flour; wheat bran; soybean meal; corn gluten; soy protein concentrate and soy protein isolate), four initial (population) densities (1, 2, 5 and 10 insect pairs) were evaluated. Adult insects were kept for seven days on a range of different diets to feed and oviposit before they were removed. After removing the adults, the emerging progeny were examined. The study found T. castaneum offspring could not develop on a carbohydrate-rich diet (corn starch) and on protein-rich diets (corn gluten, soy protein concentrate and soy protein isolate). Soy isolate showed a high, possibly insecticidal effect on parents. The fastest total development (egg to adult) (23.25–23.88 days, depending on the initial density), the highest offspring number (111.63–324.13) and the highest offspring body mass (1.38–1.73 mg) were recorded in wheat bran, while the slowest egg to adult development (35.13–37.88 days), the lowest offspring number (25–29) and the lowest offspring mass (1.04–1.48 mg) were recorded in soybean meal. The higher initial densities caused the eclosion period to be prolonged, reductions in female productivity and in offspring body mass on all diets. Initial density interacted differently with diet type in terms of offspring number, so as the density rose, the number of offspring in wheat bran and corn feed flour increased, while in soybean meal it remained low at all initial densities. This research gives us a better insight into the development of T. castaneum in animal feed that can help us to improve existing pest management in a way of finding a better solution to store products based on their susceptibility to this storage pest.

AB - Laboratory trials were conducted in wheat grain to assess the effectiveness of low temperature (5 °C), applied at intervals of 5, 7, 9, 11, 20, 25, 30 and 35 days (d), as a control measure for stored product insect pests of the genus Sitophilus, and compared the results with the impacts of 7 d pre-acclimation at 15 °C and non-acclimation. Mortality was determined after 1, 2 and 7 d of recovery in the laboratory at 25 ± 1 °C and 60 ± 5% r. h., while progeny were assessed 7 weeks later. Acclimation had the strongest impact on S. oryzae after 5 d exposure to 5 °C and 7 d recovery, while the same effect on S. zeamais was shown after 20 and 25 d of exposure and 1 d recovery, and the same impact on S. granarius occurred after 30 and 20 d of exposure and 1 and 7 d recovery, respectively. Low temperature was found to be the most effective against S. oryzae, and the least effective against S. granarius. Mortality was high (≥96%) in both S. oryzae test groups after 11 d of exposure and 7 d recovery, S. zeamais mortality was high (>97%) after 35 and 30 d of exposure and 2 and 7 d of recovery, respectively, and S. granarius mortality was ≤87% in all test variants. Total reduction (100%) of non-acclimated S. oryzae, S. zeamais and S. granarius progeny required 8, 25 and 30 d of exposure to 5 °C, respectively, while acclimated weevils required 11, 30 and 30 d, respectively.

AB - Several options of protection of organic cereals (winter and spring wheat, rye and maize) from insect and rodent pests, using a combination of traps (with or without pheromone/ attractant) and sticky tapes and no chemicals, were tested in a warehouse over the summerspring season of 2019/2020. Temperature in the warehouse was 14-29°C and humidity around 50%. The average grain moisture of winter and spring wheat and rye was 10-11%, while it was 12-14% in maize grain, and the average grain temperature of all cereals was 13-27°C. Regarding stored-product insect pests, five coleopteran, two moth and one Psocoptera species were detected, and the coleopterans predominated (98.5%) along with secondary pest insects (94.0%). Regarding rodents, only specimens of Mus musculus were found throughout the test period, their maximum monthly frequency being 72 (in January 2020). A combination of traps (with or without pheromones) and sticky tape barriers was found to provide an effective tool for trapping insects. Also, snap traps and trapping boxes for killing rodents, when used simultaneously with sticky tape barriers, were found to provide good protection of cereals from house mice. The pest control effect was also confirmed by collecting samples of organic cereal grain, which showed no significant presence of stored-product insects or grain damage (0.94% and 0.96% in spring wheat and rye, respectively) at the end of the test period. The results showed a great potential of combined application of traps and sticky tapes for protecting organic cereals in horizontal bulk storages, but the use of chemicals approved for organic food production would be required under extended storage periods.

abstract = "Several options of protection of organic cereals (winter and spring wheat, rye and maize) from insect and rodent pests, using a combination of traps (with or without pheromone/ attractant) and sticky tapes and no chemicals, were tested in a warehouse over the summerspring season of 2019/2020. AB - Tribolium castaneum is one of the most economically important insects that damages stored products. The effects of several infested or uninfested raw feed materials (wheat bran, coarse wheat meal, corn feed flour), feed products (compound feed for pigs and for laying hens) and flour mixed with brewer’s yeast on the food-searching behaviour of T. castaneum adults were studied in a total of 48 combinations. Preference and olfactometer tests revealed that all the tested uninfested and intraspecific infested substrates were significantly more attractive to T. castaneum than the control (represented by part of an arena or olfactometer arm without substrate). We determined that all infested substrates were 2–9 times more attractive than uninfested in the preference test, while in the olfactometer test, they were 3–8 times more attractive. In comparing the attractiveness of the infested and uninfested substrates, in both tests wheat bran was found to be the most attractive substrate to T. castaneum adults and coarse wheat meal the least. The results of the present study contribute to our knowledge of how raw feed materials and products influence the behaviour of T. castaneum and their susceptibility to infestation, and indicate the possible utilization of wheat bran in monitoring processes of T. castaneum in pest management programmes.

AB - Background: Modern methods of stored wheat grain protection from insect pests strive towards optimizing the use of different techniques and methods within integrated pest management (IPM) programs. One of the methods of integral grain protection is the application of natural originating insecticides. Main body: The potential of the natural origin synthetic insecticide abamectin (a product of soil bacteria, Streptomyces avermitilis fermentation) on the grain borer, Rhyzopertha dominica F. (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae), in stored wheat, barley, ray, oats, and triticale was evaluated. The evaluation was conducted in 3 rates. The effects of its application on the infestation of R. dominica on certain physical and chemical traits of cereal grains were examined. The efficacy of abamectin after 7 days of exposure, in all applied dosages, was low (< 56.5% in wheat and < 30.5% in other grains). Abamectin efficacy was significantly increased after 14 days of exposure. R. dominica mortality was 99.0 and 100% after 21-day exposure at the abamectin rates of 0.5 and 1.0 mg kg−1 , respectively. Ten weeks after grain treatment, the 3 examined rates prevented the emergence of progeny. The amount of the damaged grains and dockage, as a nus-product of feeding of R. dominica larvae and imago, compared to the untreated, infested sample was significantly smaller, which represents a positive aspect of abamectin application. The application did not change significantly the moisture, protein, and ash contents, in comparison to the control. Conclusion: Positive aspects of the abamectin application on different grain species (wheat, barley, rye, oats, and triticale) caused the highest rates of R. dominica mortality after 21 days of exposure where a total prevention of progeny emergence and absence of changes on technological grain properties occurred.

AB - Laboratory experiments were carried out to evaluate the impact of zeolites of different origins on the mortality of the maize weevil (Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky). We tested the efficacy of natural zeolites (Slovenian and Serbian) and a synthetic zeolite (Asorbio®). Diatomaceous earth (SilicoSec®) was used as a positive control. We applied the zeolites as surface treatments (at concentrations of 10 g/m2 and 20 g/m2) and as admixtures (grain with zeolites) (at concentrations of 450 ppm and 900 ppm). The mortality of the weevils when the zeolites were applied as a surface treatment was evaluated every day until the 7th day after application; delayed mortality was measured every day until the 14th day after application. When the zeolites were admixed, we evaluated mortality after the 7, 14, and 21 days. The research was performed at two different relative humidity values (55 and 75%) and at three different temperatures (15, 20 and 25 °C). We conclude that the mortality of maize weevils was influenced by relatively high temperature and low relative humidity values. There was no impact of the zeolite dose on the mortality of the maize weevils when applied as a surface treatment. The mortality of the weevils was similar in the treatments with the two natural zeolites (Slovenian and Serbian), while the mortality of the maize weevils was the lowest in the treatments with Asorbio®. The use of natural zeolites as a protectant for stored products was shown to be effective in our research, although additional surveys should be conducted.

AB - The presence of the invasive coccinellid Harmonia axyridis in aphid colonies on plants, as well as its co-occurrence with native coccinellid predators was studied in the period 2011-2020. Also, its occurrence on fruit plants and grapes was monitored at harvest time. Research was conducted on 41 locations in Serbia. The feeding of this invasive species was recorded on a total of 43 aphid taxa of 25 different genera. It was most frequently present on aphid colonies of the genera Aphis, Brachycaudus and Myzus. The presence of H. axyridis in aphid colonies was recorded on 58 cultivated plant species: 10 fruit, 7 field crop, 5 vegetable and 16 ornamental species, as well as 20 non-cultivated plants. Harmonia axyridis feeding was also observed on mature fruit plants of cultivated blueberries, nectarine and grapes in representative production areas in Serbia. Nine native coccinellid species were detected in this study: Adalia bipunctata, Adalia decempunctata, Coccinella septempunctata, Hippodamia sp., Hippodamia apicalis, Hippodamia variegata, Hippodamia tredecimpunctata, Hippodamia undecimnotata and Propylea quatuordecimpunctata. Populations of H. axyridis and native coccinellids co-occurred in aphid colonies on many plants, i.e. in 53.45% of all samples. The results inferred that H. axyridis as a predator of numerous aphids on many plants is a useful coccinellid species. However, it may also be considered as a potential pest in fruit and grape production, and a threat to native aphidophagous coccinellids.

AB - The influence of wheat endosperm vitreousness on the effectiveness of spinosad and spinetoram against lab populations of Sitophilus granarius, Sitophilus oryzae (from Serbia) and Sitophilus zemais (from Serbia and Slovenia) were evaluated in a laboratory conditions. Characteristics of two test wheat varieties were determined, i.e. a variety with high (HVWG) and another with low (LVWG) endosperm vitreousness. Spinosad and spinetoram were applied at the doses of 0.5, 1 and 2 mg/kg (ppm) to both wheat varieties. Mortality was assessed after 7, 14 and 21 days, while impact on progeny production/reduction PR (%) was assessed after 8 weeks. All doses of spinosad applied to the HVWG variety and 1–2 mg applied to the LVWG variety achieved high mortality (93–100%) of S. granarius after 14 days, while high mortality of the other test species (97–100%) was achieved by 1–2 mg doses on the HVWG and 2 mg on LVWG varieties. After 14 days, all doses of spinetoram achieved high mortality (96–100%) of S. granarius on both wheat varieties, while high mortality of S. oryzae (97–100%) and both populations of S. zeamais (93–100%) was achieved using 1–2 mg doses on the HVWG and 2 mg dose on the LVWG variety. The highest S. granarius PR (>90%) was found in both wheat varieties treated with 2 mg/kg of spinosad or spinetoram, while the highest PR of S. zeamais was observed in HVWG treated with 2 mg/kg of spinosad and 1–2 mg/kg of spinetoram, and in LVWG treated with 2 mg/kg of spinetoram. The greatest PR (91–94%) of S. oryzae in both wheat varieties was observed only in grain treated with 2 mg/kg spinetoram. In general, endosperm vitreousness was found to influence the effectiveness of spinosyns to all Sitophilus species, especially their doses not causing high mortality.

AB - This paper presents data on the dynamic of B. aeneus populations in winter oilseed rape in the downriver section of the Danube in Serbia, which were acquired by yellow water traps and a beating method. Their susceptibility to several insecticides of different classes (organophosphates, pyrethroids and neonicotinoids) (adult vial test and dipping test) was tested over two seasons (2009 and 2010). B. aeneus populations developing under the agroecological conditions that exist in Serbia were monitored to detect the moment of OSR infestation during its sensitive growth stages. Adults were counted, and the data revealed that they infest winter OSR crops during the stem elongation growth stage (BBCH 30-31), reaching a population peak at the green-yellow bud stage (BBCH 57-59), and exceeding the economic threshold, while the populations decreased substantially during the subsequent stage (BBCH 61-69). Laboratory test results did not confirm any changes in B. aeneus susceptibility/resistance to pyrethroid, organophosphate and neonicotinoid insecticides. Migration of B. aeneus populations was monitored as a way of developing predictive models for estimation of infestation severity and the timing of pest outbreaks under agroecological conditions existing in Serbia. As resistance to pyrethroids has been confirmed in B. aeneus populations in many European countries, their susceptibility will be further monitored.
