AB - Abstract: Members of the Monoctonina subtribe have long been neglected in applied studies of
the subfamily Aphidiinae, due to their low economic importance, as they do not parasitize pests
of cultivated plants. Consequently, data about this group are scarce, including its taxonomy and
phylogeny. In the present study, we explore inter- and intraspecific genetic variation of Monoctonina
species, including genera Monoctonus Haliday 1833, Monoctonia Starý 1962, Falciconus Mackauer
1959 and Harkeria Cameron 1900. We employ two molecular markers, the barcode region of the
mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and the D2 region of the 28S nuclear gene
(28S rDNA), to analyze genetic structuring and phylogeny of all available Monoctonina species,
and combine them with morphological data for an integrative approach. We report one new species,
and three potentially new species which can be formally described when further specimens are
available. Analysis of phylogenetic relationships within the subtribe shows a basal position for the
genera Falciconus and Monoctonia, and the close relatedness of Harkeria and Monoctonus.

AB - Euscelis incisus is polyphagous leafhopper that is widely distributed and abundant in diverse agroecosystems. Two generations per year allows this species to come into contact with a plethora of different phytoplasmas. We first investigated the interactions of E. incisus with phytoplasmas in different ecosystems as a bioindicator of phytoplasma diversity. Among the 510 analyzed E. incisus specimens collected from eight localities in Serbia, 53 (10%) tested positive for diverse ‘Ca. Phytoplasma’ taxa. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis and sequence comparison based on the F2nR2 fragment of the 16S rRNA gene revealed the presence of six 16S phytoplasma ribosomal groups and eight subgroups in E. incisus (16SrI-R, 16SrI-F, 16SrII-E, 16SrIII-B, 16SrIX-C, 16SrIX-E, 16SrXI-G and 16SrXII-A). The most prevalent was the 16SrXII-A phytoplasma group, represented by two multilocus stolbur phytoplasma genotypes: STOLg and Rqg31g. While the 16SrXII-A phytoplasmas were identical to the previously recorded isolates from Serbia, the 16SrI-F and 16SrI-R subgroups closely related to the previously documented 16SrI-B and 16SrI-C subgroups were recorded for the first time in Serbia. In addition, records of the 16SrIX and 16SrXI groups represent the first findings of these phytoplasma groups in Serbia. Transmission trials of ‘Ca. P. solani’ were performed with naturally infected E. incisus adults. The leafhoppers successfully transmitted stolbur phytoplasma to exposed Catharanthus roseus plants, indicating their role as a natural vector.

AB - Species from the genus Paralipsis are obligatory endoparasitoids of root aphids in the Palaearctic. It is known that these species are broadly distributed, parasitizing various aphid hosts and showing great biological and ecological diversity. On the other hand, this group of endoparasitoids is understudied and was thought to be represented by a single species in Europe, viz., Paralipsis enervis (Nees). However, recent description of two new species indicated the possibility of cryptic speciation and recognition of additional Paralipsis species in Europe. In this research, Paralipsis specimens collected during the last 60 years from eight European countries, as well as one sample from Morocco, were subjected to molecular and morphological characterization. Newly designed genus-specific degenerative primers successfully targeted short overlapping fragments of COI of the mitochondrial DNA. Molecular analyses showed clear separation of four independent lineages, two of which are the known species P. enervis and P. tibiator, while two new species are described here, viz., P. brachycaudi Tomanovic & Stary, sp. n. and P. rugosa Tomanovic & Stary, sp. n. No clear specialization of the taxa to a strict root aphid host has been determined. The recognized mitochondrial lineages were distinct one from another, but with a substantial within-lineage divergence rate, clearly indicating the complexity of this group of parasitoids, on which further research is required in order to clarify the factors triggering their genetic differentiation. We reviewed literature data and new records of Paralipsis enervis aphid host associations and distributions. A key for the identification of all known Paralipsis species is provided and illustrated.

AB - Bois noir (BN), a grapevine yellows disease induced by Candidatus Phytoplasma solani', is spreading and diversifying in several wine-producing regions of Europe, causing increased yield losses and economic concerns. The planthopper Hyalesthes obsoletus (Hemiptera: Cixiidae) is a major vector of the pathogen that causes BN disease in grapevine. Recent studies suggest that epidemiology of BN is affected by the interaction of specific host races of H. obsoletus with weedy host plants that serve as reservoirs for the pathogen. Since BN is common in grape-growing regions of Serbia, a survey was conducted during 2015-2016 to evaluate the host-plant association and vector role of H. obsoletus in central and eastern regions. We tested populations of H. obsoletus associated with Convolvulus arvensis (field bindweed) a known host for the vector and pathogen and Crepis foetida (stinking hawk's-beard) a newly identified host in southeastern Europe. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of H. obsoletus collected from C. arvensis and C. foetida using the mtDNA COI marker determined that the two populations had a genetic divergence of 1.4%. Transmission trials confirmed the vector role of C. arvensis-associated H. obsoletus and identified C. foetida-associated populations as a new and efficient host-specialized vector of BN. Each of the two host-specialized vector populations transmitted Ca. P. solani' to its original host (C. arvensis or C. foetida) and to grapevine cv. Chardonnay. Multilocus genotyping of the transmitted phytoplasma isolates based on tuf/stamp/vmp1 Ca. P. solani'-specific loci indicated pathogen segregation according to the host-plant association of the vector. All isolates transmitted by C. foetida-associated H. obsoletus were of the STOL genotype (tuf-b/STOL/V2-TA), while the C. arvensis-associated population transmitted several genotypes: tuf-b/Rqg50/V4, tuf-b/Rqg50/V14, tuf-b/Rqg31/V14 and tuf-b/Vv24/V14. This study provides evidence of a new independent BN epidemiological cycle of tuf-b Ca. P. solani' strain in the Balkan region, sourced by C. foetida and transmitted by its associated H. obsoletus population.

AB - The stolbur phytoplasma vector Hyalesthes obsoletus is generally considered as a polyphagous species associated with numerous wild and cultivated plants. However, recent research in southeastern Europe, the distribution centre of H. obsoletus and the area of most stolbur-inflicted crop diseases, points toward specific host-plant associations of the vector, indicating specific vector-based transmission routes. Here, we study the specificity of populations associated with four host-plants using mitochondrial and nuclear genetic markers, and we evaluate the evolution of host-shifts in H. obsoletus. Host-plant use was confirmed for Convolvulus arvensis, Urtica dioica, Vitex agnus-castus and Crepis foetida. Mitochondrial genetic analysis showed sympatric occurrence of three phylogenetic lineages that were ecologically delineated by host-plant preference, but were morphologically inseparable. Nuclear data supported the existence of three genetic groups (Evanno's Delta K(3) = 803.72) with average genetic membership probabilities gt 90%. While populations associated with C. arvensis and U. dioica form a homogenous group, populations affiliated with V. agnus-castus and C. foetida constitute two independent plant-associated lineages. The geographical signal permeating the surveyed populations indicated complex diversification processes associated with host-plant selection and likely derived from post-glacial refugia in the eastern Mediterranean. This study provides evidence for cryptic species diversification within H. obsoletus sensu lato: i) consistent mitochondrial differentiation (1.1-1.5%) among host-associated populations in syntopy and in geographically distant areas, ii) nuclear genetic variance supporting mitochondrial data, and iii) average mitochondrial genetic distances among host-associated meta-populations are comparable to the most closely related, morphologically distinguishable species, i.e., Hyalesthes thracicus (2.1-3.3%).

abstract = "The stolbur phytoplasma vector Hyalesthes obsoletus is generally considered as a polyphagous species associated with numerous wild and cultivated plants. AB - Archival specimens are a great resource for molecular research in population biology, taxonomy and conservation. A primary goal for researchers is to preserve specimens from collections by improving noninvasive methods for DNA extraction and to achieve successful amplification of the short fragments of a target gene in the event of DNA fragmentation. We tested the suitability of a noninvasive method of DNA extraction and amplification of the barcoding region of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidise subunit I from archival specimens of aphid parasitoids belonging to the genera Aphidius, Lysiphlebus and Praon (Aphidiinae, Braconidae, Hymenoptera). Using a commercial kit as a noninvasive method, we successfully extracted DNA from dry 7 to 41 year old samples of 26 different parasitoid species. However, amplification of the barcoding region failed using the standard primer pair LCO1490/HCO2198. In order to reconstruct DNA barcodes we designed internal genus-specific degenerative primers and a new amplification protocol to target the short fragments within the mitochondrial region. Novel primers were designed using as a template the reference sequences from congeners retrieved from the public database. The combination of standard primers with internal primers, in direct and nested amplification reactions, produced short overlapping subsequences, concatenated to recover long barcoding sequences. Additional analyses also confirmed that primers initially designed for Aphidius, Lysiphk.hus and Praon can be combined in a mixture, and successfully used to obtain short fragments of disintegrated DNA from archival specimens of several other braconid species from the genera Ephedrus and Monoctonus.

AB - The European lantern fly, Dictyophara europaea, is an alternative vector of the Flavescence doree phytoplasma (FDp) disease of grapevine in European vineyards, enabling infection initiation from wild reservoir compartment (Clematis vitalba). Heretofore recorded rate of D. europaea FDp-infection has been very low (3%), making it less epidemiologically significant than would be expected based on reservoir plant infection rate (30%). In this study we present findings on a heavily FDp-infected D. europaea population ( gt 60%), on the natural Wolbachia infection of populations with low FDp-infection rates (DeWo+) and on Wolbachia absence in highly FDp-infected population (DeWo-). We examine several possible causes underlying the differences in vector infection rates: (a) population genetic characteristics of D. europaea and correlation with Wolbachia strain wEur natural infections, (b) Wolbachia effects on fitness components of DeWo+ laboratory colony and (c) rate of reservoir plant FDp-infection and differences in FDp genotypes harboured by low and highly infected vector populations. The vector genetic diversity level was found to be lower in DeWo+ than in uninfected individuals and to exhibit a different evolution of fixed haplotypes. All DeWo+ populations were infected with the same strain of wEur. The FDp was found to be genetically diversified (five genotypes) but had no relation to infection rates. We did not find evidence of fitness upgrades with regard to Wolbachia infection status. Although more experimentation is needed, it seems that Wolbachia confers protection against FDp or is in competition with FDp according to the observed correlations: low FDp-infected vector populations are infected with Wolbachia and vice versa.

AB - Species that belong to the Aphidius eadyi group have been used as biocontrol agents against Acyrthosiphon pisum worldwide. However, despite their extensive use, there are still gaps in our knowledge about their taxonomy and distribution. In this study, we employed an integrative taxonomic approach by combining genetic analyses (mtDNA COI barcoding) with standard morphological analyses and geometric morphometrics of forewing shape. We identified three species within the A. eadyi species group, viz., A. smithi, A. eadyi and A. banksae. Genetic separation of all three species was confirmed, with mean genetic distances between species ranging from 5 to 7.4%. The following morphological characters were determined as the most important for separating species of the A. eadyi group: number and shape of costulae on the anterolateral part of the petiole, shape of the central areola on the propodeum, and shape and venation of the forewings. The differences in wing shape of all three species were statistically significant, but with some overlapping. We identified A. banksae as a widely distributed pea aphid parasitoid, whose known range covers most of the western Palaearctic (from the UK to Israel). Aphidius banksae is diagnosed and redescribed.

AB - Members of the genus Lysiphlebus Foerster are medium-sized endoparasitoid aphidiine wasps with over 30 species distributed worldwide. They attack numerous aphid hosts, and some species are important biological control agents. All European Lysiphlebus species are revised based on sequence information from the mitochondrial COI barcoding gene and the nuclear 28SD2 gene, morphological traits, and on information about their host specificity. The taxonomic status of 13 European Lysiphlebus species is confirmed, while 11 are redescribed and illustrated. The following four Lysiphlebus species are synonymized: L. melandriicola Stary, 1961 [= L. fabarum (Marshall, 1896)], L. hirtus Stark, 1985 (= L. confusus Tremblay & Eady, 1978), L. hispanus Stary, 1973 (= L. desertorum Stary, 1965), and L. safavii Stary, 1985 (= L. hirticornis Mackauer, 1960). Two new Lysiphlebus species are described: L. volkli sp.n. and L. brachycaudi sp.n. Our results, based on both COI and 28SD2, confirm the existence of three monophyletic species groups within the genus: (1) the 'fabarum' group, which includes L. fabarum, L. cardui (Marshall, 1896), L. confusus, L. hirticornis, L. brachycaudi sp.n., and L. volkli sp.n.; (2) the 'testaceipes' group, which includes L. testaceipes (Cresson, 1880), L. orientalis Stary & Rakhshani, 2010, L. fritzmuelleri Mackauer, 1960, L. balcanicus Stary, 1998, L. desertorum, [and probably L. dissolutus (Nees, 1811)]; and (3) the 'alpinus' group, consisting solely of L. alpinus Stary, 1971. Geometric morphometrics of fore wing shape proved to be a powerful tool to delineate sibling species within the fabarum' group. We were able to confirm for the first time sexual lines of L. cardui and L. confusus. Furthermore, an additional potentially asexual Lysiphlebus taxon in Europe is revealed based on the discovery of an asexual line of L. volkli sp.n. in Iran. An illustrated key for identification of the European Lysiphlebus species is provided.

AB - Aphidius ericaphidis, an aphid parasitoid originally described from North America, is recorded in Europe for the first time, based on morphological and molecular analyses. The species is recorded in Serbia, the Netherlands, Sweden and the United Kingdom. It was formerly recorded as Aphidius sp./Ericaphis latifrons/Vaccinium uliginosum from the Alps (France). The possible origin of A. ericaphidis, as well as its likely distribution, is discussed in relation to its host. As it is a specific parasitoid of Ericaphis aphids, especially the invasive aphid Ericaphis scammelli on blueberries, its potential as a biocontrol agent is also discussed.

AB - The introduction of invasive species may result in important ecological, environmental, and economic impacts. Extensive study of Auchenorrhyncha (Hemiptera) fauna in a wine-growing region in southern Switzerland revealed, for the first time, presence of the Nearctic leafhopper Osbornellus auronitens (Provancher) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) in the vicinity of Stabio (Canton of Ticino). The species identity of the collected specimens was confirmed using morphological and molecular characters. All specimens of O. auronitens were collected in a forest of Castanea sativa Miller (Fagaceae), Corylus avellana Linnaeus (Betulaceae), and Alnus glutinosa (Linnaeus) Gaertner (Betulaceae) intermixed with Cornus sanguinea Linnaeus (Cornaceae), Salix Linnaeus (Salicaceae), and Rubus Linnaeus (Rosaceae). In its native range this leafhopper is polyphagous and a relatively common visitor in vineyards. Based on analysis of the barcoding region of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene of the collected O. auronitens, 100% identity with specimens of the same species originating from Canada was determined. Osbornellus auronitens is morphologically similar to Scaphoideus titanus Ball (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae), another introduced Nearctic leafhopper, which was involved in severe outbreaks of disease caused by the Grapevine flavescence doree phytoplasma (Bacteria: Acholeplasmataceae) in European viticultural regions since the 1960s. In this paper, we report the morphological features to distinguish O. auronitens from S. titanus, and discuss the possible implications of its expected spread across the Old World.

AB - Cercospora leaf spot (CLS) caused by Cercospora beticola occurs annually in Serbia causing severe yield losses of sugar beet, which requires intensive use of fungicides. In recent years we have observed unsatisfactory control of CLS originating from northwestern Serbia. Frequency of C. beticola populations resistant to Quinone outside inhibitors (QoI) was 81% (51/63 isolates), 98% (62/63) to sterol-demethylation inbibitors (DMI) and 54% (34/63) to methyl-2-benzimidazole carbamate fungicides (MBC). The genetic basis underlying the resistance was tested by characterizing the cob, CYP51 and -tubulin genes, associated with resistance to QoI, DMI and MBC fungicides, respectively. Isolates that were resistant to QoI fungicides had the G143A mutation in the cob gene. Characterization of the CYP51 gene revealed seven diverse haplotypes; however, no correlation with sensitivity or resistance to DMI fungicides could be identified. Resistance to MBC fungicides was associated with the presence of the E198A mutation in the -tubulin gene of all resistant isolates. From a total of 63 isolates originating from sugar beet fields of northwestern Serbia, 62 isolates showed resistance to multiple modes of action. Three multi-resistant phenotypes were identified: MR1 (N = 29) - resistant to QoI and DMI fungicides (QoI-R and DMI-R) but sensitive to MBC fungicides (MBC-S); MR2 (N = 11, QoI-S, DMI-R and MBC-R); and MR3 (N = 22), resistant to all three groups of fungicides (QoI-R, DMI-R and MBC-R). This is the first report of C. beticola resistance to QoI fungicides in Serbia. This study revealed development of multi-resistance of C. beticola isolates to MBC, DMI and QoI fungicides, which represents the first record of this phenomenon in C. beticola populations.

AB - Based on the number of individuals and percentage of encounters in the studied areas, it is concluded that ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) stand out in comparison to other beetles, which is proved by the qualitative and quantitative composition of the collected fauna (51 species and 4,420 individuals) in the field of wheat, sugar beet and maize. Starting from the domination of geobiotic insects which spend most of their life in soil and manifest their imaginal activity on the surface of soil, the method of "Barber's traps" was applied. Within this family the dominant and subdominant species during research were Anchomenus dorsalis, Poecilus cupreus, Harpalus rufipes, Calosoma auropunctatum, Harpalu distinguendus and many others. 24 carabids species were determined using the COI mtDNA, i.e. 8 species which don't have reference sequence in the gene bank were determined and this contributes to the global bar-code database. The representatives of ground beetle family are of certain economic significance as well. They can appear as pests; on the other hand, they are known to be very beneficial i.e. as regulators of number of harmful insects as reported in numerous research papers of various authors.

AB - Populations of Liparus glabrirostris (Curculionidae: Molytinae), a weevil inhabiting higher altitudes of Central Europe, were sampled from 24 localities in the Alps and Carpathian Mountains, and the geographical structuring of genetic variation was analyzed. Comparison of the concatenated mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I and subunit II sequences revealed consistent genetic divergence between the populations of L. glabrirostris from different mountain ranges. In phylogenetic analysis using maximum parsimony and median-joining networks, concatenated mitochondrial haplotypes from the Alps and Carpathians clustered as separate lineages, with high bootstrap support. Substantial genetic distances determined between the separated groups ranged from 2.6 to 3.0%, with divergence estimated to have initiated approximately 0.85-0.98 million years ago. The nuclear elongation factor 1 alpha gene was additionally amplified and haplotype analysis showed very low evolutionary divergence (0.2%), with separate clustering as well. The observed divergence suggests that the populations have been isolated for a long time, as a consequence of environmental changes resulting in varying fragmentation of habitats in the Alps and Carpathians, interrupting genetic exchange events and altering the genetic structure of L. glabrirostris populations. On the other hand, comparison of morphological characteristics showed no differences to confirm genetically well differentiated groups of populations. A polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism-based method was therefore developed to discriminate between the Alpine and Carpathian lineages.

AB - A progressive spread of stolbur-associated symptoms observed in potato fields in Serbia over the past few years initiated the study on disease epidemiology and transmission pathways performed during 2013 and 2014. Inspection of potato fields on 12 localities in northern Serbia revealed high incidence (60 % of symptomatic plants) and wide dispersal (100 % of inspected localities) of 'Candidatus Phytoplasma solani'. A qualitative analysis of Auchenorrhyncha fauna in affected potato fields identified 16 species, however only Hyalesthes obsoletus, Reptalus panzeri and R. quinquecostatus tested positive for 'Ca. P. solani'. Multilocus typing of strains associated with field collected potato plants and insects had been performed to identify the propagation scenario underlying the threatening epidemics. Combined analyses of the tuf, stamp and vmp1 genes detected ten genotypes, seven of which were shared by the potato plants and insects, confirming their interaction, with no clear species-specific association of certain 'Ca. P. solani' genotypes with plausible insect vectors. Semi- field experiments with naturally 'Ca. P. solani'-infected H. obsoletus and R. panzeri confirmed the ability of both species to successfully transmit the pathogen to potato plants and induce symptoms characteristic of stolbur disease. The third putative vector R. quinquecostatus shared genotypes of 'Ca. P. solani' with potato plants and other two cixiids, and though not tested in this study should not be ruled out as a potential vector. Our study revealed rather complex epidemiology of potato stolbur in Serbia involving several possible routes of horizontal transmission and provided experimental evidence for two natural planthopper vectors.

abstract = "A progressive spread of stolbur-associated symptoms observed in potato fields in Serbia over the past few years initiated the study on disease epidemiology and transmission pathways performed during 2013 and 2014. Our study revealed rather complex epidemiology of potato stolbur in Serbia involving several possible routes of horizontal transmission and provided experimental evidence for two natural planthopper vectors.",

AB - The European lantern fly Dictyophara europaea (Linnaeus, 1767), is a polyphagous dictyopharid planthopper of Auchenorrhyncha commonly found throughout the Palaearctic. Despite abundant data on its distribution range and reports on its role in the epidemiology of plant-pathogenic phytoplasmas (Flavescence dore, FD-C), literature regarding the biology and host plants of this species is scarce. Therefore, the aims of our study were to investigate the seasonal occurrence, host plant associations, oviposition behaviour and immature stages of this widespread planthopper of economic importance. We performed a 3-year field study to observe the spatiotemporal distribution and feeding sources of D. europaea. The insects's reproductive strategy, nymphal molting and behaviour were observed under semi-field cage conditions. Measurement of the nymphal vertex length was used to determine the number of instars, and the combination of these data with body length, number of pronotal rows of sensory pits and body colour pattern enabled the discrimination of each instar. We provide data showing that D. europaea has five instars with one generation per year and that it overwinters in the egg stage. Furthermore, our study confirmed highly polyphagous feeding nature of D. europaea, for all instars and adults, as well as adult horizontal movement during the vegetation growing season to the temporarily preferred feeding plants where they aggregate during dry season. We found D. europaea adult aggregation in late summer on Clematis vitalba L. (Ranunculaceae), a reservoir plant of FD-C phytoplasma strain; however, this appears to be a consequence of forced migration due to drying of herbaceous vegetation rather than to a high preference of C. vitalba as a feeding plant. Detailed oviposition behaviour and a summary of the key discriminatory characteristics of the five instars are provided. Emphasis is placed on the economic importance of D. europaea because of its involvement in epidemiological cycles of phytoplasma-induced plant diseases.

AB - Here we tested Aphidius urticae s. str. host-associated lineages from Microlophium carnosum (Buckton), Amphorophora rubi (Kaltenbach), Macrosiphum funestum (Macchiati) and Aulacorthum vaccinii Hille Ris Lambers with the barcoding region of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene used to analyse population differences and elucidate phylogenetic relationships between the separated taxa. This molecular marker has been shown to be the most informative molecular marker in resolving species complexes in aphidiine parasitoids. Analyses of the mitochondrial sequences revealed the existence of three clearly separated mitochondrial lineages of A. urticae s. str. group associated with: i) Macrosiphum funestum and Aulacorthum vaccinii aphid hosts, ii) Microlophium carnosum and iii) Amphorophora rubi. This corresponds to the initial descriptions of A. rubi, A. silvaticus and A. urticae and their aphid host associations prior to synonymization of A. rubi and A. silvaticus with A. urticae. On the other hand, significant evolutionary distances ranging from 2.3 to 9.2% between the three mitochondrial lineages were not accompanied by clear morphological differences. Therefore, re-descriptions of A. rubi and A. silvaticus are presented, together with their morphological differentiation in a key, as well as their phylogenetic relationships and genetical differentiation.

AB - Background: Morphological divergence often increases with phylogenetic distance, thus making morphology taxonomically informative. However, transitions to asexual reproduction may complicate this relationship because asexual lineages capture and freeze parts of the phenotypic variation of the sexual populations from which they derive. Parasitoid wasps belonging to the genus Lysiphlebus Foerster (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Aphidiinae) are composed of over 20 species that exploit over a hundred species of aphid hosts, including many important agricultural pests. Within Lysiphlebus, two genetically and morphologically well- defined species groups are recognised: the "fabarum" and the "testaceipes" groups. Yet within each group, sexual as well as asexual lineages occur, and in L. fabarum different morphs of unknown origin and status have been recognised. In this study, we selected a broad sample of specimens from the genus Lysiphlebus to explore the relationship between genetic divergence, reproductive mode and morphological variation in wing size and shape (quantified by geometric morphometrics). Results: The analyses of mitochondrial and nuclear gene sequences revealed a clear separation between the "testaceipes" and "fabarum" groups of Lysiphlebus, as well as three well-defined phylogenetic lineages within the "fabarum" species group and two lineages within the "testaceipes" group. Divergence in wing shape was concordant with the deep split between the "testaceipes" and "fabarum" species groups, but within groups no clear association between genetic divergence and wing shape variation was observed. On the other hand, we found significant and consistent differences in the shape of the wing between sexual and asexual lineages, even when they were closely related. Conclusions: Mapping wing shape data onto an independently derived molecular phylogeny of Lysiphlebus revealed an association between genetic and morphological divergence only for the deepest phylogenetic split. In more recently diverged taxa, much of the variation in wing shape was explained by differences between sexual and asexual lineages, suggesting a mechanistic link between wing shape and reproductive mode in these parasitoid wasps.

AB - Bois noir (BN), which is induced by 'Candidatus Phytoplasma solani' ('Ca. P. solani'), is an important grapevine yellows disease that causes severe damage in viticultural regions throughout the Euro-Mediterranean basin. An epidemiological survey to determine potential insect vectors and the primary reservoir plants of BN phytoplasma in Macedonian vineyards was undertaken between 2012 and 2013 in the southeastern part of the country. A study on the species diversity from the suborder Auchenorrhycha revealed the prevalence of the principal vector of 'Ca. P. solani', which is the planthopper Hyalesthes obsoletus. Reptalus panzeri, which is the second-most documented BN vector, was not recorded in Macedonian vineyards. Three leafhopper species, namely Psammotettix alienus, Artianus manderstjernii and Euscelis incisus, were also widespread in the BN-affected vineyards, but only H. obsoletus tested positive for 'Ca. P. solani'. Molecular characterizations were performed by the sequencing and/or RFLP typing of tuf, vmp1 and stamp genes, and the results were used to gain detailed insight into the molecular diversity of the 'Ca. P. solani' strains associated with grapevines, tentative reservoir plants (Urtica dioica and Convolvulus arvensis) and the H. obsoletus associated with these plants. Among the 91 'Ca. P. solani' strains detected in diverse plant and insect hosts, three tuf, five vmp1 and 11 distinct stamp genotypes were identified. Twelve comprehensive genotypes of 'Ca. P. solani' were detected according to the tuf/vmp1/stamp genotyping. The highest diversity of genotypes was detected among the strains from H. obsoletus individuals associated with U. dioica, of which the most frequent genotype was tuf-ab/V18/M1 (43 %). The tuf-b/V2-TA/STOL comprehensive genotype was found in 33 % of naturally infected grapevines. Two 'Ca. P. solani' genotypes were associated with U. dioica, namely (i) tuf-ab/V18/M1 (60 %) and tuf-a/V3/M4 (40 %), and only one genotype (tuf-b/V2-TA/Rqg50) was associated with C. arvensis.
