AB - of EOs on alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) seed dormancy. The four different varieties of alfalfa were used for the experiment (Zaječarka-83, Banatska-VS, K-28, Novosadska H-11). Two essential oils, lavender (Lavandula angustifolia Mill.) and peppermint (Mentha piperita L.) were applied at four concentrations:1%, 0.5%, 0.2%, and 0.02%, along with water as a control. Germination, dormant seeds and dead seeds were evaluated in a laboratory setting according to ISTA rules. The type of EOs had no discernible influence on germinated seeds, dormancy, and dead seeds. Both EOs in concentrations of 1% and 0.5% inhibited seed germination. The maximum germination of 91.66% was achieved with the Novosadska H-11 variety using lavender oil at a concentration of 0.02%, with reduced dormancy. Varieties Zaječarka-83 and Banatska-VS had the highest level of dead and dormant seeds when lavender and peppermint EOs were applied at a concentration of 0.2%. This study showed that both EOs at a concentration of 0.02% had a stimulatory effect on seed germination, simultaneously reducing seed dormancy, emphasizing their potential use for seed quality improvement in organic farming.

AB - The work presents main findings from investigations of our and other different researcher carried out on different cultivars using chitosan, its derivatives, nanoparticles and other antritranspirant compounds (like Di-1-p-menthene). The work demonstrates that this chitosan (and other antitranspirants) is highly effective against the most dangerous diseases and pathogens in different cultures. Also, natural origin of chitosan (and also, other antitranspirants) makes it suitable for use in organic agriculture. Furthermore, it also contributes to improving yield and different plant physiological and growth parameters. Additionally, it induces excellent resistance to some abiotic stresses (drought, salt, and low temperature) and reduces their negative impact on different cultivars.

AB - This study aimed to evaluate the influence of environmental conditions and genotype on the yield of three maize lines and the morphological properties of ears and seeds. Three hybrid maize lines were used as material in the study conducted in two consecutive years (2018 and 2019) at one location (Zemun Polje, Belgrade, Serbia). The following parameters were monitored: seed weight (SW), seed volume (V), bulk density (BD), ear length (EL), ear thickness (ET), fraction content and seed yield (MSY). Calibration divided the seed into a small seed fraction of 6.5-8.4 mm (SF) and a large seed fraction of 8.5-11 mm (LF). Seeds smaller than 6.5 mm and larger than 11 mm are presented as seed waste fraction (FW). The average seed yield for all three lines in the first and the second year was 6.13 and 4.66 t ha-1 , respectively. A significant impact of the environment was noticed on seed weights in both years (2018 and 2019), i.e. 327.56 and 251.77 g, respectively. The total variation in yield determined by the morphological characteristics of the seed was R2 =0.514.

AB - This study aimed to determine the influence of sowing dates on morphological properties and grain yield. The experiment was conducted during 2018 (Y1) and 2019 (Y2) at one location in Serbia (Zemun Polje). Three inbred lines, produced at the Maize ResearchInstitute (Serbia), were used as the material. Sowing was set in two terms, earlier 1 April (SD1) and optimal 20 April (SD2). Morphological properties of the cob were measured in the laboratory conditions: the ear weight (EW), the cob weight (CW), the cob length (CL), the cob thickness (CT), the 1000 kernel weight (SW), and the grain yield (GY). The sowing date significantly affected the morphological properties of the cob (p≤0,05). The interaction of factors also had a significant impact on the variability of traits. Three-way analysis of variance indicates that SD1Y1 treatment in combination with ZP1 and ZP3 inbred lines has a higher yield (6.28 t ha-1, 7.05 t ha-1). Further, the 1000-kernel weight in all three genotypes was higher in the SD1, ZP1 (324.35 g), ZP2 (329.78 g), and ZP3 (326.55 g). The earlier sowing date was also favourable for the cob weight.Meteorological conditions can be more or less stressful for field crops. Adverse weather conditions can be avoided or reduced by applying different sowing dates.

AB - The exepression of morphological and physiological traits depends primarily on the hybrid
combination and then on the ecological conditions of the environment. The material used in these studies were performed with maize hybrids from the maturity group (FAO 600), within the groups we had two hybrids (H1, H2) derived at the Maize Research Institute, Zemun Polje and produced in two locations. Seeds for laboratory testing were divided into six fractions (SP, SO, SSP, SSO, KP, KO) and after that working samples of 10x100 seeds were formed. Under laboratory conditions, the following seed traits were analysed: 1000-seed dry weight prior to germination (M2), seedling dry waight (M3), ensosperm dry weight afret to germination (M1), seed emergence (IV), germination rate. The aim of this study was to determine the difference in seedling dry weight and endosperm dry weight after to germination according to seeds fraction and hybrid combination. The averge of
1000- seed dry weight in both hybrids is 315.0 g. The weight of the M3 ranged between 17.7 g. And 19.9 g. The difference in M3 between seeds of different sizes is significant for SP and all other fractions except for KP. M1 ranged from 235.5g. do 360.0 g. M1 differed significantly between SP, SO, KP, and KO. M1 and M2 did not influence the formation of the sedling dry weight. Ek differs according to the shape of the seed, the seed of flat fractions has an energy> 80%, while the seed of round fractions is <77%. The rate of seed germination ranged from 84-100%. Flat fractions had more affected rate germination than round ones. The hybrid combination and seed fraction was statistically significant for all observed traits. The effect of genotype x location and genotype x fraction interactions was the most important on the formation of seed weight. Sedling seed is the first stage in the formation of a seed crop. The rate of seed sedling formation and its weight are important aspects of the success of further production.

AB - The environment protection, energy, and resources preservation are especially pronounced under present climate changes. In agriculture, these changes are recognised as drought, high temperatures, occurrence of stormy winds and hail. The aim of this study was to determine variations in seed morphology that are a result of different sowing dates in relation with agro- ecological conditions of maize (Zea mays L.) cultivation. The material used for the study encompassed three inbred lines (G1, G2, G3) sown every 10 d on five sowing dates (T1, T2, T3, T4, T5) starting from 1 April to 10 May, during 2 yr (Y1: 2018, Y2: 2019). The following physical properties of seeds were estimated: width (W), length (L), thickness (Tk), ratio of small (SF) to large fraction (LF) and grain yield (GY). The width was the highest in all three inbreeds on T4 (1.00, 1.03, 0.99 cm, respectively); T5 was the least favourable date for L (1.09, 1.12, 1.09 cm, respectively) while Tk was the lowest in G1 (0.51 cm) and G2 (0.51 cm) sown on T1. The most significant differences in the formation of physical properties occurred in seeds sown on T5 (p ≤ 0.05). The highest differences were observed in width between T5-T4 (-0.223 cm), in length between T5-T2 (-0.309 cm) and in thickness between T5-T3 (-0.129 cm). Later sowing dates favoured LF (85.2%) in comparison to SF (14.7%). Seed size variability participated with 50% in yield formation (R2 ≥ 0.5).

AB - The paper presents the seed production technologies of maize sown on three different sowing dates. Seeds of three maize inbred
lines (L1, L2, L3) were used as a seed material in the location of Zemun Polje in 2018. The objectives of the present study was to
determine the importance of different sowing dates as a method to overcome stressful conditions caused by unfavourable
environmental factors, as well as to point out to a significance of the seed size in sowing. Effects of the following factors were
observed in relation to emergence and the maize grain yield: sowing date (SD), seed fraction (LF, SF and PF) and genotype (L). The
gained results indicate that the lowest percentage of emergence was determined in the variant L2/SD2/SF (34%), while the highest
grain yield was determined in the variant L3/SD1/ PF 8.86 t/ha. The standard deviation of the yield is the largest for variants with the
highest yield

AB - Abstract: Polyphenols present in different plant cell organelles increase the resistance of plants to various types of environmental
stresses. We investigated the possibility of increasing the content of bioactive compounds in the seed of yellow
soybean variety Laura. The soybean was treated during vegetation with five products based on plant extracts, on the
assumption of enrichment of plants with various nutrients. Soybean flour extracts were screened spectrophotometrically
for total phenolic content and antioxidant activity. The antioxidant activity was evaluated using three methods. The content
of phenolic acids was determined by HPLC, and the raw protein content was estimated by the Kjeldahl method. Depending
on the treatment, variations in the quantity of individual phenolic acids with up to 90% higher concentration as compared
to the control were observed. Controlled usage of certain plant extracts can increase the concentration of the target group of
bioactive compounds in the samples. The synergistic effect of proteins and phenolic compounds on the antioxidant activity
of extracts was detected. The results of this study are not only important from the aspect of plant resistance to various types
of stress, but also when considering soybean as a functional food.

AB - 24-epibrassinolide (24-EBL) is plant steroid hormone that can regulate several physiological effects in plants, including promotion of cell growth and induction of heat stress tolerance. The purpose of this work is to investigate the influence of various concentrations of 24-EBL on the dehydration mechanism of seedlings of two maize hybrids (ZP434 and ZP704). Control and treated samples were subjected to isothermal conditions for dehydration processes. The effects of carbohydrates and mineral contents on the possible changes in the dehydration mechanism (from kinetics standpoint) were investigated. Comparing control samples to samples treated with 24-EBL, it was found that different dehydration mechanisms exist The differences arise from the influence of 24-EBL, that causes a significant increase of phosphorus values for ZP704, whilst the reverse was identified for ZP434. It was assumed that the plumule sensitivity to dehydration stress originates from the interaction of water with primary amino groups as cations in polyamines, for lower concentrations of 24-EBL. It was found that the temperature variation (105-130 degrees C) leads to situations where trehalose does not arrive fast enough to "replace the water", because its handicap to binds (by hydrogen bonds) to biomolecules instead of water. It was found that 24-EBL cause changes of carbohydrates properties, which are important for the defense mechanism from environmental stresses. (C) 2018 SAAB. Published by Elsevier B.V. AB - Deficiencies of mineral elements in human nutrition could be surpassed by crop fortification. One of the prevalent measures of fortification is foliar fertilization. The aim of this study was to determine the content and availability of the mineral nutrients Mg, Fe and Zn, together with phytate, as an anti-nutritive factor, and β-carotene as a promoter of mineral nutrient availability in grain of two soybean cultivars (Nena and Laura) treated with different non-standard foliar fertilizers (mainly based on plant extracts). Generally, a negative correlation between Fe and phytate indicated that factors which decrease phytate and increase β-carotene could be primarily responsible for Fe utilization by humans and animals. Zlatno inje (based on manure) had the highest impact on increasing the grain yield and decreasing the ratios between phytate and mineral elements in Nena grain, while for Laura, it was generally Zircon (based on an extract of Echinacea purpurea L), increasing also availability of mineral elements.

AB - Barley grain is rich in mineral nutrients, but their bioavailability to humans depends on antinutrients that restrain bioavailability and promoters that promote bioavailability. The aim of this study was to examine composition of barley grain, including phytate and phenolics as antinutrients, carotenoids and glutathione as promoters and mineral elements, such as Ca, Mg, Fe, Si, Zn and Mn influenced by various non-standard foliar fertilizers (Zircon, Chitosan, Siliplant, Propikonazole), including some hormonal growth-stimulators (Epin Extra, Benzyladenine), as potential biofortification measure. Chitosan increased glutathione concentration in grain. Unfavorable meteorological conditions were partly mitigated by application of Benzyladenine and Siliplant, reflected through increased potential bioavailability of P, Mg, Ca and Fe.

AB - Malnutrition, as a global problem, is mainly caused by low level of mineral elements in staple food (deficient soil). Biofortification is based on selection of genotypes with enhanced concentration of mineral elements in grain, as well as decreased concentration of substances which interfere bioavailability of mineral elements in gut (like phytic acid), and increased content of substances that increase availability (such as beta-carotene). The experiment with 51 maize (Zea mays L.) inbred lines with different heterotic background was set up in order to evaluate chemical composition of grain and to determine the relations between phytic acid (PA), beta-carotene, and mineral elements: Mg, Fe, Mn, and Zn. The highest average phytate, beta-carotene, Fe, and Mn content was found in grain of inbreds from Lancaster heterotic group. The highest content of Mg was in grain of Independent source and Zn in grain of BSSS group. Increased level of Fe and Mn in Lancaster lines could be partially affected by higher PA content in grain, while increased beta-carotene content could improve Mn and Zn availability from grain of BSSS genotypes and Mg availability from Lancaster inbreds. It is important to underline that PA reduction is followed by Zn content increase in grain of Lancaster heterotic group, as well as that variations in Mg, Fe, and Mn contents are independent on PA status in inbreds from Independent source, indicating that the genotypes with higher Mg, Fe and Mn status from this group could serve as favorable source for improved Mg, Fe, and Mn absorption.

AB - Background: Chemical composition of soybean grain may be modified by application of foliar fertilizers. The aim of this study was to test the effect of different organo-mineral foliar fertilizers: Zlatno inje, Bioplant Flora, Algaren BZn, Zircon, as well as plant growth regulator Epin Extra, on potential availability of mineral elements (Mg, Fe, Mn and Zn) from grain of three commercial soybean varieties: ZP-015, Nena and Laura (variety lacking in Kunitz trypsin inhibitor). In addition, phytate (Phy) and beta-carotene contents were determined. Results: ZP-015 achieved the highest P, Mg, Fe, Mn and beta-carotene contents. Laura had the highest Phy level, which might reflect the diminished availability of nutrients from grain. Compared to control, most of the applied fertilizers increased beta-carotene and decreased Mn content in all three soybean varieties. Increase in beta-carotene content was followed by increase in Fe content, mainly in grains with larger weight, as a part of improved yielding potential. Conclusions: Positive effect of Zircon application was evident on increased grain weight, and beta-carotene and Fe content. These parameters together with the lowest values found for Phy/beta-carotene and Phy/Mg ratios may explain the enhanced Mg and Fe bioavailability. On the other hand, positive effects of Epin Extra were mostly reflected by a decrease of Phy and an increase in Fe and Mn, thus becoming more bio-available. Accordingly, the organo-mineral foliar fertilizers based mainly on phenolic acids (Zircon) and bioregulator (Epin Extra) are to be recommended for soybean fortification.

AB - High-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) combined with image analysis and pattern recognition methods were used for fingerprinting of phenolic compounds present in seedlings of two maize genotypes ZP 434 (new generation hybrid, drought tolerant) and ZP 704 (older generation hybrid, drought sensitive) treated with different concentrations of 24-epibrassinolide. This is the first report of TLC chromatographic profile of phenolics' mixtures in maize seed extracts influenced by brassinosteroid phytohormones. Nine samples of shoot of seedlings for the whole concentration range of phytohormones (5.2 x 10(-7) -5.2 x 10(-15) M), one sample of root of seedlings treated with 5.2 x 10(-15) M 24-epibrassinolide, and the control samples of nontreated seedlings, for both genotypes, were analyzed. Phenolic profiles of root extracts indicate the absence of more polar compounds such as phenolic acids and glycosides present in shoot of seedlings. Also, hormones applied in higher concentrations have an inhibiting effect on the content of phenolics in ZP 434. Application of chemometric methods enables characterization of particular genotype of maize according to its phenolic profile.

AB - Background: The 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) is using as a growth regulator in tissue culture media. Maize seeds have poor ability to maintain germination rate in the long term. Objective: To examine the possible restorative effect of homeopathic 2,4-D potencies on maize seedlings originating from seeds damaged by accelerated aging. Methods: Seeds of four maize lines were subjected to accelerated aging stress treatment. Seed samples were treated with distilled water (control) and a range of potencies of 2,4-D: 3C, 3.75C, 4.5C, 5.25C and 6C. The germination capacity, fresh substance (FS) and length of root and shoot were determined. Hydrolysis and biosynthesis, GSH/GSSG ratio and redox capacity were calculated. Results: Induced seed aging decreased germination rate and growth of seedlings. 2,4-D potencies did not have a statistically significant effect on germination. However, there were statistically significant effects on FS production, root and shoot length and redox capacity. The 3C potency had the largest effect on the FS accumulation, 4.5C increased root and shoot length, compared to control (statistically significant). The GSH/GSSG ratio and the redox capacity were decreased by aging. The 3C and 4.5C potencies tended to reverse the GSH/GSSG ratio (statistically significant) in the root and shoot, (i.e., shifted the redox balance to the reduced state). Conclusion: Homeopathic potencies of 2,4-D appear to have a beneficial effect on artificially aged maize seeds: they stimulate growth through better substance conversion from seed rest, and shift the redox capacity towards a reduced environment. Further work is required to determine if this is an useful means of improving maize seed germination and growth.
