AB - Tomato, one of the most produced vegetables in the world, is experiencing continuous global increase in both production and consumption. Fruit quality traits are important for fresh market tomatoes as well as for the processing industry. Despite the growing demand for both fresh and processed tomatoes, consumers are not satisfied with the quality of available fruits. The main objectives of the present work were to determine the physicochemical characteristics [pH, total soluble solids (TSS), total titratable acids (TTA), TSS/TTA ratio, DMC, lycopene, β-carotene, vitamin C, and total phenolic content], as well as the antioxidant activity of 13 different tomato lines, and to identify the most promising ones in terms of fruit taste and quality. Antioxidant activity was determined using the ABTS and DPPH methods with Trolox used as the standard compound. PCA analysis was conducted to identify group patterns. The results of PCA analysis indicated a specific genotypic response in all investigated physicochemical traits. Genotypes 2, 10, and 13 were identified as the best for fresh consumption, as they exhibited the highest levels of compounds crucial for good taste, nutrition, and human health benefits. The most promising genotype related to fruit quality attributes was genotype 10 with the best TSS and TAA content and TSS/TAA ratio, which is important for overall taste perception. On the other hand, genotype 9 showed promise for industrial purposes due to its ideal pH value in the juice and good soluble solid content. High antioxidant activity was characteristic of genotypes 1 and 2, and their consumption as fresh tomatoes can be beneficial to human health. They also should be considered for further evaluation as potentially interesting genotypes for abiotic stress research and selection programs which can lead to the development of both superior fruit quality and stress tolerant genotypes.

AB - This research focuses on assessing the general profitability
of organically produced spelt. Spelt is an ancient grain that
has experienced a resurgence in Serbia in the late seventies
of the previous century, due to its exceptional nutritional
value and high compatibility with organic farming. Field
experiments were conducted in northern Serbia over
four years, applying further financial analysis. The main
goal of the research is to identify and quantify the costs,
benefits, and general profitability of organic production of
spelt in the climatic conditions of Serbia. Results indicate
that organically produced spelt is economically profitable,
primarily due to its significantly higher market price
compared to conventionally produced spelt. Given climate
change concerns, promoting the cultivation of climateresilient
crops, like spelt, becomes crucial. Organic spelt
cultivation could play a significant role in adapting crops
to climate change, emphasizing the need for activities that
mitigate negative environmental impacts.

AB - The use of fertilizers is an integral part of agricultural production nowadays, as it has beneficial effects
on the yield of agricultural products and the functioning of the agricultural sector. Nevertheless, their unregulated
use can lead to serious harmful effects on the environment and human health. The aim of this research is to
measure the residual amounts of selected elements in agricultural soils, aggregated due to the use of fertilizers
during the vegetation season and to predict the potential for contamination of agricultural soils. The applied dose
of fertilizers has resulted in the accumulation of heavy metals in the soil, but their quantities were within the
allowed threshold values.
AB - Primena đubriva je u današnje vreme sastavni deo proizvodnje jer unapređuje poljoprivredni sektor
i prinos gajenih biljaka. Međutim, njihova nekontrolisana primena može dovesti do ozbiljnih štetnih efekata na
životnu sredinu i zdravlje ljudi.

prinos i kvalitet voća. Primena herbicida predstavlja efikasnu meru suzbijanja
korova u voćnjaku. Savremeni pristup suzbijanju korova podrazumeva
smanjenje upotrebe hemijskih sredstava i primenu alternativnih metoda kontrole
korova, samostalno ili u kombinaciji. Klasične mehaničke mere (košenje,
okopavanje, ručno uklanjanje i dr.) su “tradicionalne” metode kontrole korova.
Sve češće primenjivane nehemijske metode su upotreba malča, toplotnih izvora,
vode i precizna kontrola (roboti, dronovi i si.). Glavna prednost nehemijskih
metoda su njihova ekološka prihvatljivost i održivost.

AB - The main goal of our study was to find an optimal combination of tested factors to achieve lettuce rich in bioactive compounds sustaining its pleasant taste. We examined three red and three green cultivars in a greenhouse using two microbiological fertilisers (EM Aktiv and Vital Tricho), and their combination. Plants were grown in three consecutive growing seasons (autumn, winter, and spring). Lactones accumulated in autumn, whereas phenolics’ concentration rose during winter. Red cultivars showed higher phenolics and lactone content, where chicoric acid and luteolin-7-glucoside were the most abundant in the ‘Gaugin’ winter trial. Lactucopicrin was the predominant lactone among tested cultivars with the highest value in the red cultivar ‘Carmesi’. Solely applicated, the fertiliser EM Aktiv and Vital Tricho led to significantly higher phenolic acid and dihydrolactucopicrin content, while combined, there were notably increased levels of all detected lactones. Application of single fertilisers had no effect on flavonoid content, while the combination even reduced it. A sensory analysis showed a negative correlation between overall taste and total sesquiterpene lactones, lactucopicrin, caffeoylmalic, and chlorogenic acid, indicating a less bitter taste with decreasing content of these compounds. Our findings indicate that the cultivar, fertiliser, and growing season jointly affected all of the tested parameters, highlighting the differences in the application of EM Aktiv, Vital Tricho, and their combination.

AB - This paper presents research of production possibilities of miscanthus (Mischantus × giganteus Greef et Deu) in agroecological conditions of Serbia. For that purpose, an experiment was set up in Srem on the site of Podunavlje village of Surduk. The soil on which the plantation was established in 2012 belongs to the type of carbonate chernozem on a loess plateau, at an altitude of 150 m. Stalk height in the panicle stage and yield of dry miscanthus stalks during five years, from 2015 to 2019, as well as the content of cellulose in dry stalks depending on agroecological conditions and variants of fertilization without top dressing and with spring top dressing of 30 kg ha1 of nitrogen fertilizer, were analysed. The highest recorded yield of dry stalks was in 2019 (34.525 kg ha1 ), and the lowest recorded yield was in the dry year of 2017 (17.980 kg ha1 ), both in the variant with top-dressing.

AB - Lettuce is a worldwide grown leafy vegetable rich in phytochemicals which are essential in human diet. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of genotype, microbiological fertilisers and season on the rosette fresh weight and components of antioxidant activity. Six cultivars (green ‘Kiribati’, ‘Aleppo’, ‘Aquino’ and red ‘Murai’, ‘Carmesi’, ‘Gaugin’) were grown in a greenhouse experiment during three consecutive seasons (autumn, winter and spring) with application of microbiological fertilisers (EM Aktiv, Vital Tricho and their combination). Green cultivars showed higher fresh weight than red in spring and winter. Green cultivar ‘Aleppo’ showed the highest fresh weight in control during spring. Microbiological fertilisers led to increased fresh weight in autumn. Mainly, red cultivars showed higher quality parameters compared to green (total antioxidant capacity, total phenolic content, total carotenoids and POD activity). Red cultivar ‘Carmesi’ showed the highest total antioxidant capacity, total carotenoids, and total phenolic content in winter with combination of fertilisers, Vital Tricho, and in control. In spring, ‘Carmesi’ and ‘Gaugin’ showed the highest POD activity with Vital Tricho, and combination of fertilisers. The present study suggested that genotype, fertilisers and season jointly influenced quantity and quality parameters with emphasis on Vital Tricho, and/or combination of fertilisers.

AB - An ethnobotanical survey of the traditional use of the wild raspberry (Rubus ideaus) was conducted on nine sites in the regions of southwest (SWS) and southeast (SES) Serbia. The regions studied belong to mountainous rural areas in Serbia, mainly populated by Serbian people of the Orthodox faith. In total, 93 respondents were interviewed about the medicinal, food and cosmetic uses of the wild raspberry. In terms of plant parts in traditional use, the leaf and fruit are known to be used frequently. The dry leaf is more commonly used in the SES (78%) than in the SWS (25%) region. In the SWS region, the most frequent use of the wild raspberry leaf is linked to gastrointestinal disorders and prostate inflammation. In the SES region, the leaves are mostly used for the prevention and healing of gynecological disorders during both pregnancy and lactation. The local population of the SWS region uses the fruits mainly for the preparation of syrup juice (92%), fruit preserves (42%) and in desserts (62%), while in the SES area the fruits are most frequently used for the preparation of nonalcoholic (97.4%) and alcoholic beverages (35.9%). Our results provide some novel information on the use of the wild raspberry in Serbia and in the Balkans, such as for the treatment of prostate inflammation, use during breastfeeding and to alleviate inflammation of the eyes.

AB - To assess the effects of ABA deficiency on tomato fruit growth, the ABA mutant flacca was grown in an optimal soil water regime and various analyzes were performed, including morphological (fruit number, diameter and fruit biomass), physiological (duration of growth and fruit growth rate), biochemical (ABA accumulation, enzyme cell wall peroxidase activity) as well as proteomics. The fruit growth analysis showed that the slower fruit growth rate and development resulted in smaller flacca fruits in comparison to the wild-type fruits. The comparison of the temporal dynamics of cell wall peroxidase activity and ABA content in our experiment indicated an opposite relationship during fruit development. Proteomic analysis and the down-regulation of most proteins from carbon and amino acid metabolism, the translation and processing of proteins, energy metabolism and cell wall-related metabolism in the flacca fruits compared to the wild type, indicated reduced metabolic flux which reflected a slower fruit growth and development and reduced fruit size in the ABA mutant. These findings also indicated that ABA limited carbon sources, which could be responsible for the reduced fruit growth and size of ABA-deficient tomato fruits. The up-regulation of sulfur and oxygen-evolving enhancer proteins in the flacca fruits implicated the maintenance of photosynthesis in the late expansion phase, which slows down transition to the ripening stage. The majority of antioxidative and stress defence proteins were down-regulated in the flacca fruits, which could be related to the role of ABA in the activity of different antioxidative enzymes as well as in regulating cell wall expansion and the cessation of fruit growth.

AB - The aim of the paper is to test the effect of climatic conditions and management practices on the yield of two quinoa cultivars (Puno and Titicaca) and to analyze the economic benefits of quinoa productivity. The experiments were carried out during the 2017 and 2019 growing seasons in rain-fed conditions on a Serbian farm. The results of the two-year long experiments proved that the growing of the quinoa cultivar Puno and particularly the cultivar Titicaca in the agro-ecological conditions of Serbia would be remarkably successful from the aspect of agronomy (with the obtained average yield of 2.5 t ha-1) as well as from the aspect of economy (with the achieved average profit of 9,411 € ha-1). The obtained profit values indicate that the quinoa production in the Republic of Serbia would be more cost-effective than the production of the field crops which are already produced, particularly in the increasingly present arid conditions.

AB - Water deficit triggers physiological, biochemical, and molecular changes in leaves that could be important for overall plant adaptive response and it can affect tomato yield and quality. To assess the influence of longterm moderate drought on leaves, four tomato accessions from MAGIC TOM populations were selected on the basis of their differences in fruit size and were grown in a glasshouse under control and water deficit conditions. Drought affected stomatal conductance more in large fruit genotypes compared to cherry genotypes and this could be related to higher abscisic acid (ABA) leaf content. Compared to large fruits, cherry tomato genotypes coped better with water stress by reducing leaf area and maintaining photochemical efficiency as important adaptive responses. Accumulation of soluble sugars in the cherry genotypes and organic acid in the leaves of the larger fruit genotypes indicated their role in the osmoregulation and the continuum of source/sink gradient under stress conditions. Longterm moderate drought induced upregulation of NCED gene in all four genotypes that was associated with ABA production. The increase in the expression of ZEP gene was found only in the LA1420 cherry genotype and indicated its possible role in the protection against photooxidative stress induced by prolonged water stress. In addition, upregulation of the APX genes, higher accumulation of vitamin C and total antioxidant capacity in cherry genotype leaves highlighted their greater adaptive response against long-term drought stress compared to larger fruit genotypes that could also reflect at fruit level.

AB - Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is an annual, leafy crop with a short growth in cool season. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of microbiological fertilisers, genotype and growing seasons on the fresh weight (FW), concentration of nitrate and vitamin C in the rosette (head) of red lettuce. The greenhouse experiment included three cultivars ('Murai', 'Gaugin' and 'Carmesi') of red lettuce grown in fertile soil during successive growing seasons: autumn, winter and spring. Three types of microbiological fertilisers: (1) mixture of fungi and bacteria and their products, referred to as effective microorganisms (EM), (2) containing Trichoderma spp. and (3) mixture of EM and Trichoderma spp., were applied for red lettuce. Microbiological fertilisers were applied in the soil and via foliar spray before planting. Significantly higher FW of the rosette was in spring and winter than in autumn. The 'Murai' showed significantly the highest (264.7 g) FW of the rosette in spring. Trichoderma spp. fertiliser and the combination of effective microorganisms and Trichoderma spp. significantly increased FW of the rosette for the 'Murai' and 'Gaugin' grown in autumn. The highest nitrate concentration was observed for winter grown 'Carmesi' (805.2 mg kg(-1)) treated by effective microorganisms, and the lowest for spring grown 'Gaugin' (62.2 mg kg(-1)) without microbial fertilisers. Generally, the application of microbiological fertilisers contributed to a significantly higher concentration of nitrate in the rosette of red lettuce. The concentration of nitrate did not exceed maximum level for protected lettuce (EC No 563/2002). In spring, significantly the highest concentration of vitamin C (12.2 mg 100 g(-1) FW) was found in the 'Carmesi' treated with Trichoderma spp. Microbiological fertilisers contributed to significantly higher concentration of vitamin C in the 'Gaugin' and 'Carmesi' grown in winter and spring. This study indicated that genotype, treatment and growth season affected all the tested parameters highlighting the importance of application of Trichoderma spp. or the combination of Trichoderma spp. with effective microorganisms.

AB - The aim of this study was to investigate the quinoa fruit and seed microstructure, as well as to determine the qualitative composition of quinoa whole seed spatial localisation of food reserves in cultivars Puno and Titicaca using two complementary spectroscopic techniques (Fourier Transform infrared and Raman). The analyses of the seeds also included measurements of the crude proteins and starch contents. The experiment was carried out during the 2016 growing season in rain-fed conditions in the north of Serbia. The analysis of the scores of the principal components based on the Raman spectra revealed two groups in both seed parts (cotyledons and perisperm). The analysis of the loadings highlighted the spectrum region that contributed to the differentiation, e.g. the band at 472 cm(-1) was related to the amylopectin content in the perisperm region. As for the cotyledons, the spectral range from 1100 to 1650 cm(-1) was responsible for genotype differences and it included both the most important bands derived from Amide I, II and quinoa protein with globoid crystals composed of phytin. IR analysis, similar to the analyses of the crude proteins and starch contents in the seeds, failed to reveal any differences in biochemical composition between two analyzed genotypes.

AB - The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of long term moderate drought stress on fruit yield and quality of four parents of the MAGIC TOM population and to gain insight into the differences in sensitivity to drought between large fruited and cherry tomatoes. Results showed that long term water deficit had a negative effect on fresh mass and fruit diameter that were more expressed in cherry tomatoes than in large fruited ones. Long term moderate water deficit can improve fruit taste in large fruited tomato genotypes by active metabolic accumulation of soluble sugar and organic acid (sucrose and citric acid), which are also osmotic active compounds. The reduction in fruit growth of cherry tomatoes compared to large fruits could be compensated for by improving fruit nutritional value (ascorbic acid, carotenoids and antioxidant activity) through both concentration and metabolic responses.

abstract = "The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of long term moderate drought stress on fruit yield and quality of four parents of the MAGIC TOM population and to gain insight into the differences in sensitivity to drought between large fruited and cherry tomatoes. The reduction in fruit growth of cherry tomatoes compared to large fruits could be compensated for by improving fruit nutritional value (ascorbic acid, carotenoids and antioxidant activity) through both concentration and metabolic responses.",

AB - Modern agriculture is faced with two tasks: (1) to produce enough food for a growing global population, and (2) to ensure satisfactory crop quality while using water resources efficiently. A study of the effect of kaolin on the yield, quality and water use efficiency of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.), grown under different irrigation regimes, is reported in the paper. The research was conducted in an open field with carbonate chernozem soil, at Stara Pazova (40 km north of Belgrade, Serbia). It lasted for three years (2011, 2012, and 2013). The experimental setup was a two-factorial, completely random block system, with three replications. The first factor was the irrigation regime and the second the application of kaolin. Two irrigation treatments were studied: (a) full irrigation (F), covering 100% of ETc (crop evapotranspiration), and (b) deficit irrigation (D) at 50% of ETc. The kaolin treatments were: (a) control treatment, without kaolin (C) and treatment with a 5% suspension of kaolin (K). On average, the highest fresh tomato fruit yields were achieved under full irrigation, with kaolin (FK) (21.0 kg m(-2)). The FK treatment also resulted in the greatest dry weight of the fruits (1.1 kg m(-2)). The average fruit weight was rather uniform and ranged from 71.7 g with DC to 75.4 g with DK. The average sugar and lycopene content was quite uniform over the study period, while the irrigation regime had a significant effect on the average organic acid content and total antioxidant activity. Deficit irrigation treatments resulted in a higher organic acid content and higher total antioxidant activity than full irrigation. The application of kaolin had a greater effect of the water use efficiency of tomato than the irrigation treatment.

AB - Years which are encompassed by the research, according to the mean daily air temperatures and precipitation, were characterized by the frequent occurrence of extremely warm and dry vegetation periods. The aim of the research is to estimate the economic viability of the production of maize, potatoes and tomatoes in terms of FI (full irrigation). The assessment of the economic viability of the application of the irrigation system when it comes to maize and potato production is done on the basis of a comparative analysis of the realized profit in the natural water regime and FI, whereas in the case of greenhouse tomato production it is done on the basis of comparative analysis of profit achieved in terms of RDI (regulated deficit irrigation) and FI. The research results indicate a positive economic effect of the irrigation system implementation because in our climate the water needs of a culture cannot be satisfied solely by precipitation, and thus water deficit occurs. This lack of rainfall causes yield reduction because it is the main parameter which increases the production profitability. Therefore, increasing the area under irrigation is very important.

AB - The effects of partial root-zone drying (PRD) on tomato fruit growth and proteome in the pericarp of cultivar Ailsa Craig were investigated. The PRD treatment was 70% of water applied to fully irrigated (FI) plants. PRD reduced the fruit number and slightly increased the fruit diameter, whereas the total fruit fresh weight (FW) and dry weight (DW) per plant did not change. Although the growth rate was higher in FI than in PRD fruits, the longer period of cell expansion resulted in bigger PRD fruits. Proteins were extracted from pericarp tissue at two fruit growth stages (15 and 30 days post-anthesis [dpa]), and submitted to proteomic analysis including two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry for identification. Proteins related to carbon and amino acid metabolism indicated that slower metabolic flux in PRD fruits may be the cause of a slower growth rate compared to FI fruits.

AB - The aim of paper was to asses the use of regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) for production of two tomato cultivars (Cedrico and Abellus) in polytunnels in Serbia. RDI plants received 60% of the water that was applied to FI plants and significant saving of water for irrigation and increased in irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE) were achieved. Yield data for Cedrico cultivar showed no differences between RDI and FI, while due to the bigger sensitivity to drought, yield of Abellus was reduced under RDI. In general, fruit quality (soluble solids, titrable acidity) was sustained or improved in both cultivars under RDI. Economic analyses showed that due to the current low prices of water and electricity in Serbia, the profit increase of Cedrico, similarly to the previously trialed cultivar Amati, was not high under RDI comparing to FI. Reduction of yield and consequent profit for Abellus, indicated that for future commercial growing of tomato under RDI should be used drought resistant cultivars.

Reduction of yield and consequent profit for Abellus, indicated that for future commercial growing of tomato under RDI should be used drought resistant cultivars.",

AB - Many vegetables, including tomato and potato, have high water requirements, so that supplemental irrigation is necessary for successful production. The predictions are that the demand for irrigation will increase considerably in years to come to alleviate the consequences of climate change and more frequent and severe droughts. Water is expected to become the main limiting factor in agricultural production. However, as a consequence of global climate changes and environmental pollution, water available for agriculture is often reduced. Emphasis therefore must be placed on crop physiology and crop management under dry conditions in order to make plants more efficient water users. Recent results have demonstrated that regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) and alternate partial root drying (ARD) are new deficit irrigation strategies which may decrease demand for agricultural use of water. The application of these techniques to crops such as tomato and potato has demonstrated benefits in terms of improved wateruse efficiency and a stable yield, in addition to an increased yield quality. Both methods are developed on what is known on plant responses to drought stress and to the mechanism of root-to-shoot drought stress signalling. In this paper we review the research on the responses of tomato and potato to ARD and RDI irrigation strategies, with special emphasis on drought stress signalling mechanisms. Comparison of the beneficial effects of ARD and RDI were done with the aim to suggest which of these strategies may be used to get maximum tomato and potato water productivity and economic returns in dry environments.

AB - Partial root drying (PRD) is a new irrigation strategy which applies alternating regimes of irrigation to half the root system while the other half dries out. In PRD treated tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L., v. Astona) plants 60% of water of fully irrigated plants (FI) plants was applied to one half of the root system while the other half dried down. The irrigationwas shifted when soil water content of the dry side decreased for 15%. Although flowering occurred earlier in PRD comparing to FI, PRD treatment did not stimulate the development of more flowers on each inflorescence. However, the numbers and diameter of fruits were similar in PRD and FI treatments pointed out a stimulative effect of PRD on fruit set and development.
