AB - This research focuses on assessing the general profitability
of organically produced spelt. Spelt is an ancient grain that
has experienced a resurgence in Serbia in the late seventies
of the previous century, due to its exceptional nutritional
value and high compatibility with organic farming. Field
experiments were conducted in northern Serbia over
four years, applying further financial analysis. The main
goal of the research is to identify and quantify the costs,
benefits, and general profitability of organic production of
spelt in the climatic conditions of Serbia. Results indicate
that organically produced spelt is economically profitable,
primarily due to its significantly higher market price
compared to conventionally produced spelt. Given climate
change concerns, promoting the cultivation of climateresilient
crops, like spelt, becomes crucial. Organic spelt
cultivation could play a significant role in adapting crops
to climate change, emphasizing the need for activities that
mitigate negative environmental impacts.

AB - Common ragweed – Ambrosia artemisiifolia L. (Asteraceae) is an invasive plant species in Europe native
to North America. Most of the records of known eriophyid mites on different ragweed species are from their native
range. Our field experiments in Slovakia, 2016–2023, aimed to identify specific species feeding on common ragweed.
We searched for symptomatic plants and collected growing tips, which were then preserved in 70% ethanol for further
study. A recently described species of eriophyid mite, Aceria artemisiifoliae Vidović & Petanović (Acari: Eriophyoidea),
was found in western and eastern Slovakia. This is the first record of the species in Slovakia and the second record in
the world. It remains unclear whether this species is invasive like Ambrosia, and whether it could be used as a potential
biological control agent.

AB - Tomato, one of the most produced vegetables in the world, is experiencing continuous global increase in both production and consumption. Fruit quality traits are important for fresh market tomatoes as well as for the processing industry. Despite the growing demand for both fresh and processed tomatoes, consumers are not satisfied with the quality of available fruits. The main objectives of the present work were to determine the physicochemical characteristics [pH, total soluble solids (TSS), total titratable acids (TTA), TSS/TTA ratio, DMC, lycopene, β-carotene, vitamin C, and total phenolic content], as well as the antioxidant activity of 13 different tomato lines, and to identify the most promising ones in terms of fruit taste and quality. Antioxidant activity was determined using the ABTS and DPPH methods with Trolox used as the standard compound. PCA analysis was conducted to identify group patterns. The results of PCA analysis indicated a specific genotypic response in all investigated physicochemical traits. Genotypes 2, 10, and 13 were identified as the best for fresh consumption, as they exhibited the highest levels of compounds crucial for good taste, nutrition, and human health benefits. The most promising genotype related to fruit quality attributes was genotype 10 with the best TSS and TAA content and TSS/TAA ratio, which is important for overall taste perception. On the other hand, genotype 9 showed promise for industrial purposes due to its ideal pH value in the juice and good soluble solid content. High antioxidant activity was characteristic of genotypes 1 and 2, and their consumption as fresh tomatoes can be beneficial to human health. They also should be considered for further evaluation as potentially interesting genotypes for abiotic stress research and selection programs which can lead to the development of both superior fruit quality and stress tolerant genotypes.

AB - Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) hosts several species of aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris), Aphis craccivora Koch and Therioaphis trifolii (Monell). The preference of the aphids of alfalfa plants for dense assemblies or individual plants, as well as for healthy or infested plants, was investigated in the field as in the laboratory. Years of field research have revealed the specific preferences of all three species of aphid. A. pisum and T. trifolii are most commonly found in alfalfa crops, while A. craccivora is mostly found on alfalfa weeds. Also, a single species of aphid alone is usually present on a plant. In order to determine the reason for this clear preference and to establish whether at the very beginning, i.e. at the stage of choosing a host, aphid species distance themselves from each other, we tested the effect of the volatiles of healthy and infested plants on their attractiveness to aphids. A. craccivora is repelled by the volatiles of dense crops and plants previously infested with one of the other two species. A. pisum and T. trifolii choose a dense assembly of plants, repelled by the volatiles of plants previously infested with A. craccivora. A. pisum displays the weakest competitive traits, and A. craccivora the strongest. This research showed that competition between aphid species does not occur only when they find themselves on the same plant at the same time, fighting for resources, but also in the choice of plant, in order to avoid later competition.

AB - Za procenu promene kvaliteta uskladištenog zrna heljde, primenjen je tretman veštačkog
starenja u cilju ubrzavanja tih procesa.

AB - Bakteriozna mrljavost plodova lubenice (Acidovorax citrulli) predstavlja širom sveta
ozbiljnu pretnju uključujući uzgajivače i proizvođače semena i rasada gajenih vrsta biljaka iz
porodice Cucurbitacae.
Do danas
su opisane dve genetički različite populacije A. citrulli. U Srbiji je prvi nalaz A. citrulli
zabeležen 2014. godine na lubenici u lokalitetima Bačke i Srema. Međutim, uprkos
sprovedenim eradikativnim merama i naporima u upravljanju ovim patogenom, ponovo je
detektovan 2018., 2021., i 2022. godine na području Mačve i Srema. U cilju boljeg
razumevanja genetičke strukture populacija A. citrulli prisutnih u Srbiji, u ovom radu je
korišćena analiza sekvenci više genskih lokusa (MLSA) primenom konzerviranih gena i gena
virulentnosti.
Tokom rada korišćena su četiri reprezentativna soja A. citrulli, pod šiframa Ac414
(Čelarevo, 2014), Ac818 (Šabac, 2018), Ac221 (Ašanja, 2021) i Ac322 (Hrtkovci, 2022),
odabrana na osnovu prethodnih rezultata dobijenih umnožavanjem ponavljajućih sekvenci
DNK (rep-PCR).
lepA, phaC, pilT, trpB, ugpB) i jedan gen virulentnosti (Aave_1548).
pripadaju dvema reprezentativnim genetičkim grupama opisanim u svetu (grupe I i II). Grupi
I su pripadali sojevi izolovani 2021. i 2022. godine, a grupi II sojevi izolovani 2014. i 2018.
godine. Rezultati dobijeni u ovom radu ukazuju na puteve introdukcije i širenja A. citrulli u
Srbiji.

AB - Avena sp. je prisutna u poljima žitarica. Dve najčešće prisutne vrste su A. fatua and A.
sterilis.
122 lokaliteta širom Balkana i severoistočne, zapadne i centralne Evrope (oko 22000
semena). Analizirane osobine semena: masa, veličina, boja, dlakavost i pozicija osja su
stavljene u odnos sa geografskom lokacijom uzorkovanja. Nakon analize dobijena je
pouzdanost razdvajanja Avena sterilis vs Avena fatua R2>0.99 i RASE<0.000001 (uz nivo
braon i žučkaste.
osobina, a zbog prisustva zajedničkih osobina i stepena variranja, predstavlja veliki izazov.
ekoloških i fizioloških osobina blisko srodnih vrsta.

AB - Veliki ekonomski značaj u gajenju brojnih biljnih vrsta, a posebno korenasto-krtolastih,
plodova, krtola i mesnatog korena. Iako ovi patogeni mogu da prouzrokuju velike štete tokom
proizvodnje, ipak najveće nastaju tokom skladištenja. Primenom metode sekvenciranja DNK
vrsta bakterija ovih rodova. Tako, rod Pectobacterium do danas broji 20 vrsta, a rod Dickeya
najmanje 10.
diverzitet novoizolovanih bakterijskih populacija.
krompira. Analiza sekvenci više genskih lokusa (MLSA) vršena je primenom šest
konzerviranih gena dnaX, gapA, icdA, mdh, recA i rpoS.

vrsta bakterija ovih rodova. Tako, rod Pectobacterium do danas broji 20 vrsta, a rod Dickeya
najmanje 10.
diverzitet novoizolovanih bakterijskih populacija.
krompira. Analiza sekvenci više genskih lokusa (MLSA) vršena je primenom šest
konzerviranih gena dnaX, gapA, icdA, mdh, recA i rpoS.
patogen kupusa.",

AB - The aim of our study was to evaluate the use of Raman spectroscopy for pre-diagnostic estimation of weed response to bleaching herbicides. Model plants were Chenopodium album and Abutilon theophrasti treated with mesotrione (120 g a.i. ha−1). Raman single-point measurements were taken 1, 2, 3, and 7 days after herbicide application from different points on the leaves. Principal component analysis (PCA) was carried out on data normalized by the highest intensity band at 1522 cm−1 and using spectral region from 950 to 1650 cm−1 comprising mainly contributions of carotenoids. The carotenoids by intensive band at ∼1522 cm−1 and bands with lower intensity at ∼1155 and 1007 cm−1 in treated plants were confirmed. According to PC1 (the first principal component) and PC2 (the second principal component), the highest intensity bands responsible for treatment differentiation in C. album could be assigned to chlorophyll, lignin, and carotenes. According to PC1 in A. theophrasti leaves the treatment differences could be observed 7 days after mesotrione treatment and PC2 gave a clear separation between all control and treated leaf samples. Raman spectroscopy may be a good complement to invasive analytical methods, in assessing the plant abiotic stress induced by bleaching herbicides.

AB - Given the importance of different weed management systems (MS) for weed communities and soil seed bank, our aim was to study the impacts of organic (Org) and conventional (Conv) MS in tomato and sugar beet on the abundance of weeds and weed seed bank. The results have shown that in both crops the aboveground weed flora is dominated by 2–3 species in the Conv MS, while it is more diverse in the Org MS. In both crops the soil seed bank is less diverse when compared with the aboveground weed flora. Furthermore, a comparative analysis of the weed flora and soil seed bank has shown a high number of different weed seeds in the soil for tomato, unlike sugar beet, where a higher number of weeds was determined in the aboveground weed flora. In tomato, the soil seed bank is more diverse in Org MS (4.1 ± 1.5) than in Conv MS (3.8 ± 1.3), which was also true for the aboveground plant biodiversity (4.6 ± 1.1 vs. 3.6 ± 1.5 species, respectively). Also, although the differences in aboveground weed density and abundance in tomato were not statistically significant, seed bank reserves in the Org MS were significantly more abundant (40.4 ± 16.7 weed seeds vs. 4.5 ± 3.6 in Conv MS). This study has also shown that in sugar beet there were practically no differences between Org and Conv MS, even though the abundance of its aboveground weed flora was higher in Org MS (70.2 ± 29.4 vs. 38.1 ± 21.2 plants/m2 in Conv MS). In conclusion, it can be said that although both MS had similar effects on weed management in tomato, for sugar beet Org MS has proven to be less effective in weed control.

AB - During May 2016, severe blight symptoms were observed in several raspberry and blackberry fields in Serbia. In total, 22 strains were isolated: 16 from symptomatic raspberry shoots, 2 from asymptomatic raspberry leaves, and 4 from symptomatic blackberry shoots. Additionally, eight raspberry strains, isolated earlier from two similar outbreaks, were included in the study. Pathogenicity of the strains was confirmed on detached raspberry and blackberry shoots by reproducing the symptoms of natural infection. The strains were Gram-negative, fluorescent on King’s medium B, ice nucleation positive, and utilized glucose oxidatively. All strains were levan positive, oxidase negative, nonpectolytic, arginine dihydrolase negative, and induced hypersensitivity in tobacco leaves (LOPAT + −−− +, Pseudomonas group Ia). Furthermore, all strains liquefied gelatin and hydrolyzed aesculin but did not show tyrosinase activity or utilize tartrate (GATTa + + − −). Tentative identification using morphology, LOPAT, GATTa, and ice-nucleating ability tests suggested that isolated strains belong to Pseudomonas syringae. The syrB gene associated with syringomycin production was detected in all strains. DNA fingerprints with REP, ERIC, and BOX primers generated identical profiles for 29 strains, except for strain KBI 222, which showed a unique genomic fingerprint. In all, 9 of 10 selected strains exhibited identical sequences of four housekeeping genes: gyrB, rpoD, gapA, and gltA. Five nucleotide polymorphisms were found in strain KBI 222 at the rpoD gene locus only. In the phylogenetic tree based on a concatenated sequence of all four housekeeping genes, strains clustered within phylogroup 2 (i.e., genomospecies 1) of the P. syringae species complex, with pathotype strains of P. syringae pv. aceris and P. syringae pv. solidagae as their closest relatives. There was no correlation between genotype and geographic origin, particular outbreak, host, or cultivar.

AB - A new species of eriophyoid mite, Aculodes marcelli sp. nov., was discovered on cheatgrass, Anisantha tectorum (L.) Nevski (syn. Bromus tectorum L.), an annual grass that is native to Eurasia and Northern Africa. This grass was introduced to North America near the end of the 19th century and now is widespread and associated with the observed increases in the size, frequency, and intensity of wildfires in western N. America. In this paper, A. marcelli sp. nov., is morphologically described and illustrated. Compared with other Aculodes spp., it differs based on morphology and the sequence of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase gene, subunit I (MT-CO1). Results of morphometric analysis showed clear differentiation between A. marcelli sp. nov., and the most similar congener, A. altamurgiensis from Taeniatherum caput-medusae. Analysis of MT-CO1 sequence divergence revealed significant levels of genetic variation (17.7%) and supported the results from the morphometric analysis; therefore, it is determined that they are two different species. Aculodes marcelli sp. nov., is a new candidate agent for classical biological control of A. tectorum.

AB - A two-year field trial was conducted to study the effects of biohumus, biofertiliser, and soil conditioner application on spelt grain yield in different regions (plain, hilly, and mountainous regions) in Serbia. An analysis of economic efficiency indicators of spelt production in organic farming systems was also performed. The field experiment had a randomised complete block design with three replicates in each of the three regions. One winter spelt cultivar was also studied. The largest differences in spelt yield compared to control were found in the plain region in the biohumus + biofertiliser treatment (28.0%) and the hilly region in the organic fertiliser + zeolite treatment (28.8%). The differences in grain yield between control and treatment conditions in the mountain region were insignificant. Analysis of the economic effects of organic spelt production found a significantly lower gross margin in treatments with expensive organic fertilisers (3955.05 and 1104.75 € ha–1) than the control (5094.31 and 1833.85 € ha–1), leading to the conclusion that their application was not economically justified despite the increases in grain yield. The highest production costs (3569.71 € ha–1) were observed in treatments in the hilly region, resulting in the lowest benefit-cost ratio (0.1), while the greatest benefit-cost ratio was recorded in treatments in the mountainous region (2.1). Following the economic analysis results, a significant negative correlation between the benefit-cost ratio and the total production costs (r= –0.91**) was determined and a positive correlation between the gross margin and grain yield (r=0.66*). These results lead to the conclusion that the management strategy of spelt production in organic farming systems should be harmonised with the soil and agro-ecological characteristics of the region and directed at decreasing the costs and share of external inputs. In this case, organic spelt production can be economically profitable.

Highlights
- Organic fertilisers and soil conditioners affect spelt grain yield.
- The analysis of the economic effects of organic spelt production concluded that fertiliser application was not economically justified despite the increases in grain yield.
- Treatments in the plain region displayed the best production results compared to mountain region treatments, but these did not have the best benefit-cost ratio.
- Knowledge of production costs is an important element in improving the economic efficiency of organic farming systems.

AB - Progeny numbers and life parameters of Tribolium castaneum reared on a range of different animal feeds which varied in their protein-carbohydrate ratios (corn starch; corn feed flour; wheat bran; soybean meal; corn gluten; soy protein concentrate and soy protein isolate), four initial (population) densities (1, 2, 5 and 10 insect pairs) were evaluated. Adult insects were kept for seven days on a range of different diets to feed and oviposit before they were removed. After removing the adults, the emerging progeny were examined. The study found T. castaneum offspring could not develop on a carbohydrate-rich diet (corn starch) and on protein-rich diets (corn gluten, soy protein concentrate and soy protein isolate). Soy isolate showed a high, possibly insecticidal effect on parents. The fastest total development (egg to adult) (23.25–23.88 days, depending on the initial density), the highest offspring number (111.63–324.13) and the highest offspring body mass (1.38–1.73 mg) were recorded in wheat bran, while the slowest egg to adult development (35.13–37.88 days), the lowest offspring number (25–29) and the lowest offspring mass (1.04–1.48 mg) were recorded in soybean meal. The higher initial densities caused the eclosion period to be prolonged, reductions in female productivity and in offspring body mass on all diets. Initial density interacted differently with diet type in terms of offspring number, so as the density rose, the number of offspring in wheat bran and corn feed flour increased, while in soybean meal it remained low at all initial densities. This research gives us a better insight into the development of T. castaneum in animal feed that can help us to improve existing pest management in a way of finding a better solution to store products based on their susceptibility to this storage pest.

AB - Acidovorax citrulli, the causal agent of bacterial fruit blotch (BFB), is an economically
important pathogen of watermelon and related plant species worldwide. In the period 2014–2018,
several outbreaks of BFB were observed in major watermelon production regions in Serbia. A total of
43 strains, isolated from symptomatic watermelon tissue, were analyzed by biochemical, pathogenic
and molecular tests. Based on the phenotypic characteristics, PCR assay, and 16S rRNA gene
sequence analysis, all strains were identified as A. citrulli. A multilocus sequence analysis of the four
housekeeping (adk, gyrB, pilT and gltA) and three virulence genes (Aave_1548, avrRx01 and luxR)
revealed that studied A. citrulli strains represent the homogeneous population and they clustered
together with group II reference strain AAC00-1. Strain affiliation to group II was confirmed by PCR
based on the putative type III secretion effector gene and by duplex PCR test. High homogeneity
of studied strains was also confirmed by BOX-PCR. Differences were observed for two strains in
their pathogenicity as well as susceptibility to copper compounds. Moreover, six major watermelon
varieties grown in Serbia showed high sensitivity to the pathogen, while cross inoculation assay
revealed that the strains were able to infect other species within the Cucurbitaceae family.

AB - Crop rotation is known as an eco-friendlier approach, as provides diversification in crop management systems, modifies intensive pressure on the agricultural ecosystem, utilizes various soil horizons, and prevents the establishment of specific pests and weeds. We set out here a study on the farms that have been managed over 50 years of specific continuous crop management programs. The experimental treatments were in a different management system: monoculture of maize, winter wheat, and soybean, 2-year crop rotation (winter wheat–maize) with and without chemical fertilizer, and 3-year crop rotation (winter wheat–soybean–maize) with and without chemical fertilizer and manure. We took soil samples six times from 2014 to 2017 prior to sowing and after harvesting each year. Weed seeds were extracted from soils and identified and counted by species. We, upon the data of a long term experiment of crop rotation, could conclude that crop rotations with more crops in the sequence are significantly effective in maintaining weed populations, a low-input crop production could reach a constant low population below an important damaging density, and therefore will be a more sustainable crop production while chemical fertilizers would change the soil’s chemical and structure and imbalance the plant population diversity and manures with high weed seed infestations have the potential to totally eradicate crop rotation effects, Therefore, clean manures or compost are highly recommended.

abstract = "Crop rotation is known as an eco-friendlier approach, as provides diversification in crop management systems, modifies intensive pressure on the agricultural ecosystem, utilizes various soil horizons, and prevents the establishment of specific pests and weeds. We, upon the data of a long term experiment of crop rotation, could conclude that crop rotations with more crops in the sequence are significantly effective in maintaining weed populations, a low-input crop production could reach a constant low population below an important damaging density, and therefore will be a more sustainable crop production while chemical fertilizers would change the soil’s chemical and structure and imbalance the plant population diversity and manures with high weed seed infestations have the potential to totally eradicate crop rotation effects, Therefore, clean manures or compost are highly recommended.",

AB - Herbicide application has long been considered the most efficient weed control method
in agricultural production worldwide. However, long-term use of agrochemicals has numerous
negative effects on crops and the environment. Bearing in mind these negative impacts, the EU
strategy for withdrawing many herbicides from use, and modern market demands for the production
of healthy and safe food, there is a need for developing new effective, sustainable, and ecological
weed control measures. To bring a fresh perspective on this topic, this paper aims to describe the most
important non-chemical weed control strategies, including ecological integrated weed management
(EIWM), limiting weed seed bank, site-specific weed management, mechanical weeding, mulching,
crop competitiveness, intercropping, subsidiary crops, green manure, and bioherbicides.

AB - Bacterial fruit blotch and seedling blight, caused by Acidovorax citrulli, is one of the most destructive diseases of melon and watermelon in many countries. Pathogen-free seed and cultural practices are major pillars of the disease control. However, use of bacteriophages as natural biocontrol agents might also contribute to the disease management. Therefore, we isolated 12 bacteriophages specific to A. citrulli, from phyllosphere and rhizosphere of diseased watermelon plants. The phage strains were characterized based on their host range, plaque and virion morphology, thermal inactivation point, adsorption rate, one step growth curve, restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP), and genomic analysis. Transmission electron microscopy of three phage strains indicated that they belong to the order Caudovirales, family Siphoviridae. All phages lysed 30 out of 32 tested A. citrulli strains isolated in Serbia, and did not lyse other less related bacterial species. They produced clear plaques, 2 mm in diameter, on bacterial lawns of different A. citrulli strains after 24 h of incubation. The thermal inactivation point was 66 or 67°C. They were stable at pH 5–9, but were sensitive to chloroform and inactivated in either 5 or 10 min exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. RFLP analysis using EcoRI, BsmI and BamHI enzymes did not show genetic differences among the tested phages. Adsorption rate and one step growth curve were determined for the Acidovorax phage ACF1. Draft genome sequence of the ACF1 phage was 59.377 bp in size, with guanine-cytosine (GC) content 64.5%, including 89 open reading frames. This phage shared a very high genomic identity with Acidovorax phage ACPWH, isolated in South Korea. Evaluation of systemic nature of ACF1 strain showed that it can be absorbed by roots and translocated to upper parts of watermelon plants where it survived up to 10 days.

AB - The taxonomy of Aculus mosoniensis appears to be an unresolved question and its clarification is required, owing to the potential relevance of this mite species as a biological control agent of the tree of heaven. This paper is aimed at giving accurate details on a previously and shortly announced synonymization with Aculops taihangensis, using a morphological and molecular approach. A fusiform morph of A. mosoniensis was distinguished from a vermiform morph and this latter was recognized as deutogyne, which was herein documented. Phylogenetic relationships between Chinese Ac. taihangensis and all A. mosoniensis mites collected in twenty localities in Europe were examined through the analysis of the mitochondrial cytochrome c subunit I (CO1) protein and the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer 1 region (ITS1). CO1 sequences of Ac. taihangensis from the Shandong province in China and those from mites collected in Austria and Slovenia were 100% identical; the ITS1 sequence of an Ac. taihangensis paratype matched for 99.8% with those obtained from protogynes and deutogynes of A. mosoniensis collected in Italy. All these data supported the announced synonymization of A. mosoniensis with Ac. taihangensis. Aculus mosoniensis was found genetically variable, with five CO1 haplotypes in Europe (becoming eight along with those of Ac. taihangensis) clustering in two highly supported maternal lineages and eight ITS1 haplotypes (becoming nine along with those of Ac. taihangensis) distributed in four supported clades. No overlap between intra- and interspecies distances was observed for both markers and all studied A. mosoniensis populations clustered in one monophyletic mitochondrial clade, suggesting that only one single species might occur in Europe. However, more mite clades may be related to more tree of heaven biotypes with potential ecological differences, which might have potential effects on the biological control and should be investigated.

AB - Grapevine rupestris stem pitting-associated virus (GRSPaV), a member of the genus Foveavirus, is a commonly detected grapevine virus around the world. Despite the broad and global distribution of GRSPaV, no information on its presence in Serbia had been available before this study. In October 2018, 3-year-old grapevine plants of ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’ showing reduced growth and leaf reddening were observed in the vicinity of Krnjevo locality. The results of an mRT-PCR test showed that only samples prepared from cortical scrapings of mature symptomatic grapevine canes yielded an amplicon of 155 bp that confirmed the presence of GRSPaV. No amplification products were recorded in samples prepared from basal leaves or petioles. A serological assay confirmed the presence of GRSPaV in all tested mature cane samples. For further analyses, the CP (coat protein) genes of two selected isolates (VL8 and VL15) of naturally infected grapevine canes were partially sequenced and six sequence variants were determined, showing a certain variability among them. The constructed phylogenetic tree revealed the grouping of Serbian sequence variants into separate subgroups within the same phylogenetic lineage. This is the first report of GRSPaV present in Serbia. Further monitoring and increased phytosanitary control measures are needed to prevent potential spreading and introduction of new virus variants.
