AB  - The aim of the present study was to analyse the effect of foliar fertilisation of red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) crops with cobalt, boron and phosphorus-potassium, which could significantly increased seed yield, on seed quality after different periods of storage. The experiment involving four red clover cultivars and four foliar treatments was laid out in a randomised block design with four replications and with a plot size of 5 m2. Red clover cultivars ‘K-37’, ‘K-39’, ‘Una’ and ‘Viola’ were planted at a seeding rate of 18 kg ha-1. Foliar fertilisation with cobalt, boron and phosphorus-potassium was carried out during intensive growth (at BBCH 34-36) in the second year of cultivation. After all storage periods, red clover cultivars differed in root length, seedling mass and hard seededness under all foliar fertilisation treatments. In all storage periods, foliar treatments did not affect germination, stem length, seedling mass and percentage of hard seed in any cultivar (no significant cultivar/foliar treatment interaction). At 20 months of storage, there were no significant differences between foliar treatments and the unfertilised control in any of the studied traits. Foliar nutrients were applied prior to the emergence of generative organs; therefore, the absence of their positive effect on seed development can be associated with their overall short-term effect. The relationship between seed quality and the content of mineral nutrients in the seed after their foliar application at different stages of crop development should be a topic for future research.

AB  - In agroecological conditions of South Serbia, the influence that row spacing has on sainfoin seeds yield and quality was examined. The first year yielded the lowest (256.1 kg ha-1), whereas the highest was in the third and last year of research (649.0 kg ha-1). With respect to the row spacing, the highest yields were achieved at 40 cm (514.3 kg ha-1), and the lowest at 20 cm (428.7 kg ha-1). The row spacing had a significant effect on the quality of the seed. The highest germination energy (86.7%), seed germination (90.4%), 1000 kernel weight (25.2 g), along with the lowest hard share of hard kernels (3.5 %) were obtained at 60 cm of row spacing.

AB  - In order to determine the influence row spacing has on yield, yield components and the quality of alfalfa in agro-ecological conditions of south Serbia, a three year long research has been conducted, testing the NS Novosadjanka H-11 cultivar of alfalfa. The average seed yield of alfalfa was highest at a row spacing of 40 cm (311.03 kg ha-1), followed by row spacings of 20 cm (286.48 kg ha-1) and 60 cm (264.83 kg ha-1). The highest and lowest number of inflorescences per stem were obtained in rows spaced 60 cm (14.39 inflorescences/stem) and 20 cm apart (9.94 inflorescences/stem), respectively. The widest row spacing of 60 cm (8.14 pods/inflorescence) resulted in the highest number of pods per inflorescence, whereas the lowest number was produced at 20 cm spacing (5.96 pods/inflorescence). Grain number per pod ranged from 3.64 (at 20 cm row spacing) to 4.18 (at 60 cm). The highest quality of alfalfa seed during the three years of research was obtained at the widest row spacing (60 cm). Thousand-seed weight was highest at 60 cm and lowest at 20 cm (2.05 g and 1.99 g, respectively). The highest average values for seed germination rate were reported for 60 cm row spacing (86.92%) and the lowest for 20 cm row spacing (83.83 %).

Najviše cvasti ostvareno je setvom na rastojanju od 60 cm (13,37 cvasti/stabljici), a najmanje pri rastojanju od 20 cm (8,57 cvasti/stabljici). Međuredno rastojanje od 60 cm uslovilo je najviše mahuna po cvasti (7,15), dok je najmanje mahuna (5,50) bilo pri rastojanju od 20 cm. Broj zrna po mahuni se kretao od 3,55 (rastojanje od 20 cm) do 4,05 (međuredno rastojanje od 60 cm). Najbolji kvalitet semena ostvaren je setvom na međurednom rastojanju od 60 cm. Najviša masa 1000 semena ostvarena je pri setvi na rastojanju od 60 cm, а najniža na 20 cm (2,07, odnosno 1,97 g). Najviša klijavost semena ostvarena je pri rastojanju od 60 cm (88,00%), a najniža pri rastojanju od 20 cm (85,76 %).

Management practices effect on seed features of Italian ryegrass following storage period

AB  - Italian ryegrass seed crop was established in 2007 with two sowing densities (D1 = 60 cm row spacing and 5 kg ha-1 seeding rate; D2 = 20 cm row spacing and 20 kg ha-1 seeding rate) and using two spring nitrogen rates (0 and 150 kg N ha-1). Seed germination and thousand seed weight (TSW) of Italian ryegrass was observed in first production year. After harvest in June, seeds were stored under standard storage conditions and sampled 90 days after harvest (DAH), and then 2000 DAH. At 90 DAH, seeds were tested for TSW, as well as germination energy and total germination percentage at incubation temperatures of 10, 15, 20 and 25°C. Ryegrass seeds had the best germination energy 90 DAH at 20°C and maximum total germination at 15°C, which implies that early autumn (September-October) is proper sowing period for freshly harvested seeds of Italian ryegrass. Italian ryegrass seeds could maintain satisfactory germination energy (59.3%) and total germination (77.3%) up to 2000 DAH. High seed quality was obtained and applied treatments did not change seed quality significantly unlike storage period which had considerable influence on seed quality. The data can serve for the determination of a proper storage duration management between harvest and sowing of the tested species under ambient conditions of Serbia.
AB  - Setva semenskog useva italijanskog ljulja obavljena je u 2007 godini u dve gustine setve (D1=60 cm međuredno i 5 kg ha-1 setvena norma; D2=20 cm međuredno i 20 kg ha-1 setvena norma) i primenom dve količine azota u prihrani (0 and 150 kg ha-1). Posmatran je klijavost i masa 1000 semena italijanskog ljulja u prvoj proizvodnoj godini. Posle junske žetve, seme je skladišteno u standardnim skladišnim uslovima i uzorkovano 90 dana posle žetve (DPŽ), a potom 2000 DPŽ. Posle 90 DPŽ seme je ispitivano na masu 1000 semena, energiju klijanja i ukupnu klijavost na temperaturama klijanja od 10, 15, 20 i 25°C. Seme ljulja je imalo najbolju životnu sposobnost 90 DPŽ na 20°C i maksimalnu ukupnu klijavost na 15°C, što sugeriše da je rana jesen (septembar-oktobar) odgovarajući period za setvu sveže požnjevenog semena italijanskog ljulja. Seme italijanskog ljulja može zadržati zadovoljavajuću energiju klijanja (59,3%) i klijavost (77,3%) i 2000 DPŽ. Dobijeno je kvalitetno seme i primenjeni tretmani pri gajenju semenskog useva nisu menjali značajno kvalitet semena, za razliku od dužine perioda skladištenja, koje je imalo značajan uticaj na kvalitet semena. Podaci mogu poslužiti za određivanje dužine perioda skladištenja semena između žetve i setve italijanskog ljulja u uslovima Srbije.

At 90 DAH, seeds were tested for TSW, as well as germination energy and total germination percentage at incubation temperatures of 10, 15, 20 and 25°C. Ryegrass seeds had the best germination energy 90 DAH at 20°C and maximum total germination at 15°C, which implies that early autumn (September-October) is proper sowing period for freshly harvested seeds of Italian ryegrass. Italian ryegrass seeds could maintain satisfactory germination energy (59.3%) and total germination (77.3%) up to 2000 DAH. High seed quality was obtained and applied treatments did not change seed quality significantly unlike storage period which had considerable influence on seed quality. The data can serve for the determination of a proper storage duration management between harvest and sowing of the tested species under ambient conditions of Serbia., Setva semenskog useva italijanskog ljulja obavljena je u 2007 godini u dve gustine setve (D1=60 cm međuredno i 5 kg ha-1 setvena norma; D2=20 cm međuredno i 20 kg ha-1 setvena norma) i primenom dve količine azota u prihrani (0 and 150 kg ha-1). Posmatran je klijavost i masa 1000 semena italijanskog ljulja u prvoj proizvodnoj godini. Effect of Cobalt Application on Seed Production in Red Clover (Trifolium pratense L.)

AB  - A field experiment involving red clover varieties K-39, K-17, Una and Viola was established on an acidic (pH(H2O) 4.8) soil to evaluate the effects of foliar application of cobalt (a beneficial nutrient for efficient nitrogen fixation) on seed yield, and on seed yield components. The foliar spray of the crop was carried out using cobalt nitrate [Co(NO3)(2)] with the treatments: one application at the intensive growth phase during the first growth, while two others during the second growth within the second year of cultivation. Seed yield and yield components were recorded from the second growth within the second year of the study. Regardless of foliar cobalt application, the varieties produced a significantly higher seed yield in 2011, when the rainfall received from the onset of flowering until seed maturation was recorded as lower than that in 2010. The foliar treatment with cobalt was in general accompanied by a positive effect on seed yield and seed yield components in all the varieties. As compared with control, a significant increase in seed yield, in the cobalt applied treatment, was obtained only in Viola, mostly due to the significant increase in flower number i.e. seed number per inflorescence. The more favorable response of Viola to foliar cobalt application may have been attributed to a greater percentage of foliage cover during the treatment, as compared with the other varieties. This suggests that foliar cobalt treatment in future studies should be performed at the early stages of development i.e. during intensive growth throughout the first and second cuts, in order to stimulate nodulation and have greater nitrogen fixation in a needed timely manner.

AB  - Ovaj rad daje pregled načina setve (međurednog rastojanja i setvene norme) kako u našoj zemlji, tako i u svetu, kao i optimalne količine semena koje se mogu postići u proizvodnji semena italijanskog ljulja. Dat je i kratak pregled veličina međurednih rastojanja i količina semena za setvu u našoj zemlji i inostranstvu. Ranije se trava u cilju proizvodnje semena gajila na malim vegetacionim prostorima. Prema novijim istraživanjima, visok prinos semena se može postići gajenjem trava na velikom vegetacionom prostoru. Na osnovu postignutih rezultata može se zaključiti da se najveći prinos semena postiže u uslovima Srbije gajenjem biljaka na 20 do 40 cm međuredno i korišćenjem 15 do 20 kg ha-1 semena.

AB  - Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) cv. Tetraflorum was sown with different nitrogen application rates and it was tested under the agroecological conditions of Western Serbia. Four-year field experiments were carried out from 2002 to 2006 and the biometric characteristics of generative tillers, seed yield and shoot dry matter (herbage yield) were measured during the first production year. Italian ryegrass crop was established with four spring nitrogen application rates: 0, 50, 100 and 150 kg ha-1. Tiller length was not affected by nitrogen application, while two other tiller parameters were much more affected by the treatments. The maximum seed yield in the first production year varied among treatments depending on season conditions. Harvest characteristics were impacted by nitrogen application; however, there was an opposite impact in arid and humid weather conditions. The N application of 50 kg ha-1 was found to be the optimal for seed production in those conditions. Higher rates of N application (100 to 150 kg ha-1) had either no impact on seed yield, or decreased the yield of seed as a result of ryegrass lodging following seed shedding. Abundant shoot dry matter was obtained in some treatment variants, but there was no linear correlation between seed yield and yield components.
