AB - Plant protection with natural products is a new trend in environmentally friendly agriculture.
Nepeta rtanjensis Diklić & Milojević is an endemic and critically endangered plant species in Serbia.
We explored the phytotoxic potential of a water emulsion of Nepeta rtanjensis essential oil (NrEO)
with high amounts of trans,cis-nepetalactone on five weeds. The most sensitive was Stellaria media
(L.) Vill., as NrEO (from 0.013% to 0.1%) completely inhibited germination. Germination of
Amaranthus retroflexus L. and Artemisia vulgaris L. was completely inhibited at the highest applied
concentrations of NrEO (0.1%), while Ambrosia artemisiifolia L. germination was reduced to 48% at
the same concentration of NrEO. The most tolerant species was Cephalaria transsylvanica (L.) Schrad.
ex Roem. & Schult. as the final germination rate at the highest applied concentration of NrEO (0.1%)
was 81%, like the control (82%). To our knowledge, this is the first time the interaction of essential oils
on the germination and growth of A. vulgaris and C. transsylvanica is reported. The germination
dynamics of S. media in pots with soil were significantly inhibited when the soil was initially treated
with the highest applied concentration of the NrEO water emulsion (1%). Spraying S. media seedlings
with NrEO significantly inhibited growth parameters (shoot height, shoot fresh weight, and the number
of nodes) at the higher applied concentrations of NrEO (0.5% and 1%). Therefore, the water emulsion
of the essential oil of N. rtanjensis could be potentially developed for use in the control of invasive and
allergenic weeds.

AB - The importance of perennial
grasses is multiple. They represent the
basis of sustainable animal husbandry
and the basis of the animal feed industry,
forming the staple food of ruminants in
areas with a moderate climate as
components of natural and sown
grasslands, natural and sown meadows
that can be used through mowing,
haylage and silage.
Adequate and advanced management of
perennial grasses results in low prices of forages, significantly lower than
concentrated feed. Italian ryegrass is
characterized by rapid development and
production of a large amount of quality
forage crops.
The aim of this study was to determine
the content of cell wall components in the
dry matter of Italian ryegrass, as
important indicators of dry matter intake
and digestibility depending on the time of
harvesting and the application of nitrogen
mineral fertilizers.
The experiment was set up at the
experimental field of the Institute for
Forage Crops Kruševac, Serbia,
according to a random block system in
three repetitions. The research results
showed that the highest content of NDF
and ADF was found in the treatment with
90 kg N/ha in the I cut, while the highest
amount of lignin was found in the
treatment with 60 kg N/ha in the II cut.
Based on the obtained values for NDF
and ADF, the results showed that the
highest value for the RFV of Italian
ryegrass in the I cut is in the treatment
without the application of N mineral
fertilizers.
тревостоите третирани с 90 kg N/ha (I
откос), а с най-високо съдържание на
лигнин е фуражната маса третирана с
60 kg N/ha (II откос). Въз основа на
стойностите за НДВ и КДВ, е
установено, че при италианския
райграс, с най-висока ОХС е
фуражната маса на житната култура от
I откос, във варианта без внасяне на N
минерални торове.

AB - Alfalfa is the most significant perennial and multi-crop forage legume in Serbia. Seed production has numerous problems, which causes high variability in seed yield. One of the problems in this production is the weed seeds that are in the natural alfalfa seed after harvesting. Minimum purity must be greater than 95 %, up to 2 % of other species are allowed, and up to 0.5 % of weeds, but no quarantine weeds such as dodder (Cuscuta.sp). Weed seeds were detected in natural alfalfa seeds: Sinapis arvensis L., Amaranthus retroflexus L., Rumex obtusifolius, L., Cuscuta campestris Yunk., Rumex acetosella L., Plantago lanceolata L., Plantago major L., Rumex crispus L., Galium aparine L., Convolvus arvensis L. as expected, the variability of the number of weed seeds detected from the seed lots over three years was high: CV% = 14.78 for wild sorghum – S. halepense (L.) Pers. In the 2022, to CV% = 65.47 for ribwort plantain – Plantago lanceolata L. in the 2020. For the weight of 1000 seeds of the examined weeds, the variability was determined from CV% = 5.869 for the ribwort plantain – Plantago lanceolata L. (year 2020), to CV% = 34.41 for yellow dock – Rumex crispus L. (year 2022).

AB - In order to have successful breeding, it is necessary to introduce new breeding material constantly and to use it through various types of hybridisation to increase the existing variability. Ten (10) lucerne varieties of different geographic origin were used in the study. Six varieties originated from the Republic of Serbia (Kruševačka 22, Kruševačka 28, NS-Banat ZMS II, NS-Mediana ZMS V, Zaječarska 83 and Čačanka 10), three varieties originated from the Republic of Croatia (Osječka 66, Osječka 88 and Osječka 99) and one variety originated from the Republika Srpska (Banjalučanka). A total of 100 seeds per each of 10 (ten) lucerne varieties were placed in Petri dishes to germinate. The dishes were placed in the seed germination chamber with the altering temperature of 20 oС in the dark for 16 h and 30 oС in the light for 8 h for seven days. The first green leaflets of lucerne seedlings (cotyledons) were used for the DNA extraction. The first and the second axes from the principal coordinates analysis accounted for a total of 63.1% of genetic variation, contained in the original dataset. It is clearly observed that the genotype Zaječarska 83 is genetically most distant from other studied lucerne genotypes. These studies confirmed that the observed collection of lucerne varieties is variable enough for the successful breeding process. Using an appropriate breeding model it is possible to breed varieties for certain purposes.

AB - The demand for organic food is rising since consumers want food from reliable, highest quality sources originating from the environment, undisturbed by cultivation and processing. It is necessary to determine to what extent there is a scientific basis for the claims that organic food is of high quality. In this study, beetroot from an organic production system originating from 6 certified organic food producers from different geographic locations was examined. The organic beetroot samples were processed by pasteurization at 70 ºC and 90 ºC into beet juice or by drying at 55 ºC. The following samples were tested and compared: fresh beetroot, pasteurized beet juice and dried beetroot slices. The concentration of vitamin C, level of total phenol compounds (TPC) and antioxidative activity (TAA) in beetroot were influenced by the geographic origin and the applied processing method. The highest degradation for all analysed parameters was found in the samples treated by drying or pasteurisation at 90 ºC. The lowest losses of studied phytochemical components were observed during juice pasteurisation at 70 ºC. The correlation coefficient between TPC and TAA was high and significant (r2 = 0.966).

AB - The paper presents the results of the cleaning process of five different lots of natural alfalfa seeds and five different lots of natural red clover seeds. Natural alfalfa and red clover seeds had 75 % to 77 % purity. The experiment was performed in the seed processing center of the Institute for Forage Crops Kruševac. Seed cleaning is performed on different machines that work on the principle of differences in the physical properties of seeds. Significant parameters that define the quality of seeds after processing on the cleaning equipment are the amount of pure seed, weed seed, the seed of other crops, inert matter, amount of pure processed seed, seed losses and processing output. The obtained results enable the correct adjustment of the equipment for the seed processing, depending on the amount and type of weeds and other impurities found in the natural seed of alfalfa and red clover.

AB - Managing N, P and K inputs in semi-natural meadow production systems is important for achieving maximum yields in livestock farming. The objective of the present study was to estimate the effect of different NPK levels (N0P0K0, N50P50K50, N100P50K50, N100P100K100, N150P100K100 and N200P150K150 kg ha-1 yr-1) on the yield, quality and nitrogen nutrition index (NNI) in a grassland community of Agrostietum capillaris (semi-natural meadow) in western Serbia. The study was conducted during the seasons of 2005-2008. The values of the investigated parameters, except for the unit N uptake, were the highest in 2004/2005 due to favorable climate conditions. The levels of nitrogen significantly increased all of the studied parameters compared to the control treatment, except for unit N uptake. Mineral fertilizers at N200P150K150 provided the highest green forage yield (25.12 t ha-1), dry matter yield (8.12 t ha-1), crude protein yield (876.3 kg ha-1), nitrogen uptake (140.2 kg ha-1) and nitrogen nutrition index (70.2%), and the lowest unit N uptake (0.0022 kg N kg DMY-1). The use of mineral fertilizers increased green forage yield, dry matter yield and crude protein yield, increasing fertilizer from lowest to highest rate increased fresh and dry matter yield, as well as protein yield. Based on the results of the study, monitoring of nutrition indices would be necessary in order to increase productivity and economic benefits.
